Texans’ affinity for pecans represents a triple play among state symbols: the tree, nut, and pie. It also binds us together historically and culturally. Native Americans subsisted on the sweet nut during harsh winters, Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca wrote about pecans in his famous 16th century Texas walkabout, and Texas pioneers used abundant pecan trees for lumber, cooking, and heating, as well as food. Modern-day farmers make Texas among the largest pecan-growing states in the U.S., with harvests approaching 50 million pecans annually. Pecan trees are native to 150 of Texas’ 254 counties and have been introduced to many others. https://texashighways.com/state-symbols/the-texas-state-tree-health-nut-and-pie-pecan/ https://statesymbolsusa.org/symbol-official-item/texas/state-food-agriculture-symbol/pecan-pie

July 12th – National Pecan Pie Day. Celebrate the Texas State Pie on July 12th, National Pecan Pie Day. In 2013, the hearty pecan joined the ranks of Texas pecan symbols. Regaled as the Texas state tree and the Texas state health nut; now the pecan symbolizes this sweet, family tradition. Per the 83rd Texas Legislature, “Texans generally agree on two things: Texas pecan pies are, hands down, the best, especially when made with Texas pecans by a Texan, and secondly, whether served hot or cold, with a scoop of ice cream or without, pecan pie is indeed the perfect ending to any meal.”
