The is looking magical!

We love the Ouray Ice Park being part of this community. With more than 150 routes to choose from, it makes ice climbing accessible. It’s also a great venue to teach skills because there are so many options.

While the park is free to visit, many people hire guides to learn how to ice climb or refine specific skills. At our course progression sets you up with the skills you need to be able to climb in the ice park on your own — from movement, to anchors, and more.

No matter how you visit this beautiful park, we recommend you buy a membership to ensure it keeps running (it costs $20/climber/day to operate). Membership gets you access to events the ice park puts on throughout the season, discounts at local businesses, and early access.

GUIDE TRAINING

Each year our team gets together at the start of the winter season to practice skills, review curriculum, build camaraderie, and get current on industry updates.

Here, our ski guides sample the goods (and we did find the goods!) and gather information about the state of the snowpack in our zone. Our ice guides did some scouting, anchor checking, and mentoring on backcountry ice flows.

With heavy hearts we are reluctantly sharing news that many of you may have already heard……Kurt Blair is presumed to have taken a lethal fall on Mt. Aoraki/Cook in New Zealand earlier this week.

It goes without saying that this is a massive loss for SJMG, as well as the San Juan and mountain guiding community more broadly. We don’t really know what to say right now other than to reflect on the incredible person that we had the fortune to cross paths with in 2014. Kurt started guiding for SJMG in 2016 and his progression in becoming an IFMGA/AMGA Mountain Guide was a testament to his commitment to the profession. His passion for instructing and guiding met no match in our eyes - an unassuming, gentle character was something that from our view made him the unique and special person that he was.

We were honored to have had him on our team and he will be deeply missed by everyone in the SJMG family.

Winter is right around the corner, and the excitement is palpable! ❄️ The San Juans just had a big storm and gave us a taste of winter. We can’t wait until it starts adding up and sticking around to transform our mountains into a backcountry skiing paradise.

As summer comes to a close, we’re reminiscing about days in the mountains trodding through wildflowers and taking in breathtaking views. Our guides use to carry their gear whether on the or navigating in the backcountry.

We’re starting to plan for next summer too! Our most popular summer hiking trip, the 5-day hut-to-hut Million Dollar Trek was a hit for kids as young as 11 (pictured here) and folks in their 60s. You just have to be comfortable moving off-trail and above 11k feet!

Want to expand your skillset to climb technical peaks in greater ranges? How about learn a new climbing skill that you can train another matter the season?

We offer Mixed Climbing Courses throughout December and March with local legend Dawn Glanc. In the course you’ll learn the fundamentals of of mixed climbing so you can feel comfortable moving in and out of ice and rock terrain. Practice tool placement and efficient body positioning. Gain the skills to read the rock and the strength to climb with style and grace.

Your lead guide Dawn Glanc has been climbing since 1996 and won the comp in 2009 and 2011! She was also the first American woman to climb M11. Needless to say, she knows her stuff and loves to share her secrets!

It’s climbing season in the Black Canyon! 🧗

Our guide recently descended into the depths of this world class climbing destination in our backyard to show Charles a wild time.
