01/03/2025

Happy New Year! We are excited for the 2025 Jeeping season. Our online reservation system is available.

A couple of notes for this year. Due to Jeep corporate not committing till late December to build the Wrangler models with a 3.6l engine, which is our preferred engine over the 2.0l turbo, at the end of our 2024 season (in mid-October) we opted to retain our low mileage 2024 fleet for the 2025 season.

We have also reduced our fleet count to 3-Willy’s soft tops and 3-Rubicon hard tops so please consider booking early to ensure you have your preferred option.

If you have any questions please reach out. We look forward to seeing you this season.

Still raining down here in town but the high country is definitely getting snow. Up to 2 feet is the prediction in some places.

Update:
You can see fresh snow in the mountains up towards Yankee Boy. Weather is coming.

If you are trying to sneak in one last trip into the mountains, then you better get out there today. We have a lot of weather moving into the region and based on reports I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot of snow in the high country. Most importantly be safe and turn around if you encounter a trail you are not comfortable driving.

Please be aware of this closure. Hope this gets San Miguel prepped for the 2025 season.

Maintenance Scheduled for Silvershield Trail

Montrose, Colorado, Sept. 23, 2024 — The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests’ Ouray Ranger District will conduct significant maintenance on National Forest System Trail (NFST) #199 – Silvershield trail Sept. 28-29. Located in the Uncompahgre National Forest, the trail will undergo repairs to stabilize loose areas on steep slopes and improve the trail’s tread.

The project was prioritized due to the increased traffic following the U.S. Forest Service’s acquisition of the West Gold Hill Dinosaur Track site. This site features the longest known dinosaur trackway in the world, with 134 consecutive footprints spanning 106 yards.

This collaborative trail maintenance effort involves Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, City of Ouray, Ouray Trail Group and the Ouray Ranger District. Approximately 50 volunteers will participate in the project, aiming to enhance access to the trackway and fortify steep sections of the trail, improving long-term sustainability.

To ensure safety and avoid delays, hikers are advised to avoid the lower section of the NFST #199–Silvershield trail, below the NFST #207–Oak Creek trail, during the construction period. Alternate routes to the dinosaur track site include NFST #208–Twin Peaks trail or NFST #200–East Dallas trail.

For more information, contact the Ouray Ranger District at (970) 240-5300.

For information and updates on current fire restrictions, conditions, and recreation opportunities on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests, visit the forest website. Connect with us on social media (X (Twitter) and Facebook).

I am having issues editing our website so for now I will post our fall update here.

We had a lot of weather move in over the weekend which brought snow to the high country. Most of it has melted, but it is a stark reminder winter is on the way.

We were able to get out early yesterday and do some of our own leaf peeping. The colors are amazing right now.

Please be aware of people stopping on the side of the road to take pictures and be careful out there while enjoying this amazing time of year.

Doesn't look good for IMO to reopen. (This is for the Telluride side. Ouray side to the top is still open.) We had our suspension that it would not. It does suck that its an early close, but everyone's safety's more important. Other ways to get to Telluride are via Ophir and Last Dollar.

📣 PSA:
DISOBEYING POSTED OFFICIAL TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES IS AGAINST THE LAW

Recently, Ouray County and San Miguel County closed Imogene Pass due to mudslides. This closure was put into place for public safety reasons and until our road and bridge crews could coordinate resources to clear the slides and reopen the road. Closure notices were posted, and barricades were put into place. On Wednesday, August 28, the Ouray County Road and Bridge Superintendent traveled to the top of Imogene Pass to assess the condition of the road, in hopes of reopening the Ouray County portion. During this site visit, the road superintendent encountered multiple vehicles, dirt bikes, and ATV’s. Everyone the superintendent spoke to stated that they did intentionally go around the posted Road Closed barricades.

We would like to remind our community members, local businesses, and visitors, that disobeying posted notices and barricades is against the law and is punishable by a minimum of $111 - plus court costs, surcharges, and a 4-point driver's license assessment.

Please heed warnings that are put in place for public safety. Do your own due diligence and find out if road closures are in place or have been lifted – do not go off of unconfirmed rumors; not having the correct information is not only costly, but can potentially put you in danger with limited resources to assist or rescue you.

FYI.

Such a bummer, but we understand that with all the rain and rocks slides it’s hard to get up there and get it cleared with limited resources. Next season.

Mudslides on Hwy 550 south of Ridgway

Crews are directing alternating lanes for traffic and crews are on site working to clear the debris from the road. Please be extremely cautious when driving through these areas and be patient while this work is completed. Other areas of the county are also experiencing debris flows so be aware of your surroundings.

Our Story

In the mountains, we find beauty, simplicity, stillness, a sense of purpose and adventure. Our imagination has a freedom here like nowhere else and nature sings to us in a way that reminds us of who we are and where we belong. If we allow it, these mountains gift us humility through the interaction with the extraordinary. The wild and open spaces we know as the San Juan Mountains call us to be present, remembering that these are the moments in life that matter the most.

Come home to The Switzerland of America and be reminded of nature’s magic.
