Trailbound had a special evening hike at Buffalo Creek Preserve to celebrate an early Solstice and watch the sunset. We were lucky enough to see 7 deer, ducks, an egret, a blue heron, LOTS of wildflowers, and have a cool evening breeze. Karen and I Love being with these ladies!!

The finale to our Spring day hikes this year was at the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve, just south of Fort Sheridan. In one week, we had the range of wind, rain, and a perfect spring day. Trailbound Wild women embraced all the types of weather! We enjoyed exploring a new path, getting to know new friends, and being on the amazing Lake Michigan, as it always revives the heart.

Ryerson is one of those places that just makes you feel good! Hiking through the tall trees, bright wildflowers greeting you along the trail, the river, the symphony of the migrating birds, and the laughter of women on the trail, it was a fabulous day for all.

Trailbound had its first biking trip this week! Karen, aka "Cairn" led the bikers from Lakewood Forest to Rays Lake in Wauconda, a gorgeous ride! This same ride is offered tomorrow/Sat.! Our next bike outing is on the Chicago Lakeshore path, starting from Belmont Harbor, May 20 and 22. How do we describe our "Forest Immersion" experience. The women have said, "Calm, quite, aware".. "Forest Awakening", peaceful, beauty everywhere, "inspiring each other", "rebuilding", and "hopeful". Julie Kanak has led 3 mornings, and 1 more to go this Saturday. Reed-Turner is the PERFECT setting with the woodlands, ravine, pond, redbuds peaking, and wildflowers galore. Thank you Julie for doing an incredible job!

Did you ever want to be in the Wizard of Oz movie and frolic through the field of poppies? This is how we felt at Starved Rock last week, as we came across the millions of bluebells. We fully embraced our hikes by creek hopping, standing in awe of the canyons and waterfalls, and admiring the nonstop wildflowers. What a pleasure to be with these women at Starved Rock!!

Trailbound hit a new destination, Savanna, IL to check out the Mississppi Flyway and the bird and waterfowl migration. With over 70 species identified, we walked the backwaters of the Mississippi river, the Mississippi Palisades, and the Thomson Lock and Dam.

Highlights included seeing many eagles and a young eaglet in its nest, over 2,500 American coots, the majestic white pelicans soaring like the blue angels, learning & seeing species of duck we didn't know existed, the gorgeous wildflowers in the Palisades, and good old fashion fun of hanging out with the Trailbound Wild Women :-)

Thanks to Laura Simpson and Barb Karon, our birding experts, who made this trip such a memorable learning experience.

Stillman Nature Preserve is such an interesting, beautiful, special place, and so close for many of us. 80 acres tucked back from the road. Another wonderful find by the leaders of TBT!

The preserve is home to injured owls, falcons, and a turkey buzzard that are no longer able to survive in the wild. There are beautiful trails where wildflowers abound (squill and bloodroot this week) and ponds with heron, geese and ducks - just to name a few. It’s open to the public on Sundays and Mondays! Check out the preserve, and read the intriguing history of Alexander Stillman.

Lucky Duck me... Today I found a new trail at Deer Grove, and I found my first spring wildflowers!!! Deer Grove west, not really known for it's wildflowers (as opposed to East which has an abundance), is where I found the spring beauties, bloodroot -which only blooms for 1 day!!!, and soon to bloom trout lilly.

For some of us, the Marengo hike was our first outing after coming out of hibernation! We were so thankful that the rain held off.

We also learned how to take a Gen Z (.05) selfie from Sparkles! Try it!

Already looking forward to this week’s hike with this awesome group of Trailbound Trips women!! 🥾🥾
