Tour to Sintra and Pena Palace was revised due to 4 day strike. Easter weekend of course. So going to Quinta da Regaleira instead. Lines are atrocious. Walk is uphill and Roger was struggling so he stayed back. I had trouble with the hills and steps. So crowded.

We're excited. Finally able to take our 25th anniversary trip to Ireland and Scotland. We leave Sunday so stay tuned for a lot of photos.

Excited to travel again?
I have a small group on a small AMA Waterways river cruise planned for April 11, 2023 for Portugal. The cruise is 7 nights, leaves from Porto, Portugal, cruises up the Douro River to the border of Spain. This is an excellent opportunity to not only take in the delicious Portuguese wines and ports, but to also see 2 countries.
I can extend your journey in Portugal before the cruise and in Spain afterwards.
There are only 100 passengers on board so space is limited. If you have never sailed on a truly small luxury ship this is a great opportunity.
Call or email me for details.

We spent the last 2 days of our journey at a luxury B&B (affordable because of the season) with only 3 rooms and our last night at the Sheraton Hotel at the airport. On our way into Paris we visited a completely unexpected site, the Chateau de Pierrefonds. Relatively
unknown, it is an immense castle rivaling Versailles with 6 turrets and a double moat. It was built in the 14th century and reconstructed in 1857 by Napoleon's brother.
It was somewhat of a fiasco to get to the hotel at the airport and return the car. Charles de Gaulle is undergoing extensive construction and the signage is something to be desired
We had not received our PCR results, panicked only to discover a rapid test was available at the pharmacy inside the airport with a 20 minute wait time for the results. Covid protocols were everywhere and extensive, but did not hamper the enjoyment of our trip.
All in all, a truly enjoyable and fascinating trip.

From Dijon we picked up our rental car and drove north along the country roads and staying in several small villages. The countryside was gorgeous and splendid with Fall colors, beautiful fields and quaint villages. It was however very eerie that we saw very few people about and almost no restaurants open. This could be due to Covid, the off-season and the cold. We visited the Chateau de Chateauneuf, visible on a hill from one of B&Bs. This Chateau had an entire village built around it on the hilltop. Stunning and a great lunch. We had wanted to go wine tasting, but most are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Unfortunately, our cruise came to an end and we continued our journey by train to Dijon. Dijon is a charming city filled with Elizabethan and Tudor buildings, walking streets and of course, mustard stores. We had a wonderful B&B within walking distance of the old town and 2 delicious meals including a dinner at a Michelin star restaurant!

On the last two days aboard the ship we visited Tournas and the Chateau de Cormatin with its well-appointed rooms and beautiful gardens. Scenic cruising to Saone-sur-Chalon and another wine lecture and tasting rounded off that day. The next we visited the Hotel-Dieu, an extensive 15th century hospital built for the poor. That evening we had a gastronomical delight at the chef's table with a 7 course dinner.

For the next couple of days we cruised northward to Lyon. In Vienne we took a mini train to the top of Mt. Pipet for a panoramic view of the city with its roman ruins and the Rhone River . After lunch we arrived in Lyon which we had already spent several days so walked around the museum of the Confluence, an alien spaceship designed building. We then cruised up the Saone River to Macon where we visited an old Benedictine Abbey and then on to the castle of Berze-le-Chatel where they filmed the movie "The Last Duel". The countryside was gorgeous.

I didn't mention previously that we went through many locks on the river and the Captain was gracious to let us onto the bridge whilst navigating through them.
The next day we cruised to Valence, had a wine lecture and tasting on board and visited a local small winery.
For dinner we were had a very special dinner. AMA has been inducted into a very old French Gastronomic Society, the Chaine des Rotisseurs. The dinner reflected this culinary prowess.

From Lyon we took the train to the south again to Arles where we boarded the luxury River cruise on the AmaCello for a wine tour northwards through Provence and Burgundy. This was our 4th AMA river cruise and we enjoyed the excellent gourmet feasts, great wine, attentive service, interesting guides and tours and of course best meeting old friends and making new friends possible because of the small ship atmosphere. In Arles we visited the Roman ruins of the amphitheater and the haunts of Van Gogh. After lunch we cruised to Avignon where you could visit the Papal Palace or do a food tour.

From Nice we took the train to Lyon. Lyon is at the confluence of the Saone and Rhone Rivers. It is the gastronomical capital of France and one street boasts more Michelin star restaurants than any others in Europe. We stayed at a small local hotel and walked to the old town easily. We took a pedicab tour, a food tour (wonderful), visited the Notre Dame de Fourviere high atop the hill, and the famed and food lovers paradise, the Paul Bocuse food market.

As with many fellow travelers COVID interrupted our travel plans to France in 2020. We were however, able to take this amazing France trip in the Fall of 2021. We arrived in Nice, France at the end of October. it rained a bit but the weather for the most part was gorgeous. I love Nice. Our hotel, the Beau Rivage was one block for the promenade on the Cote d'Azur. We stayed in Nice for 3 nights (it should have been more). We had delicious sea food at the many sidewalk cafes in the old town. We visited Ville France, a charming seaside town and Antibes where we did an absinthe tasting. It is a very easy city to get around and see the neighboring towns. Monaco is a short 30 minute train ride away.
