St. Augustine, Florida, is considered the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. It was founded on September 8, 1565 by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, 11 days after he landed on the feast day of Saint Augustine. For over 200 years, the city was the capital of Spanish Florida.
From 1763 to 1783, the region fell into the hands of the British, and St. Augustine became the capital of British East Florida. After 1783, control returned to Spain until the city was ceded to the United States by treaty in 1822.
St. Augustine remained the capital of the territory until 1824, when the administration was moved to Tallahassee. In the 1880s, developer Henry Flagler began buying local railroads and building hotels, marking the beginning of winter tourism in Florida. This tourism remains an important part of the city's and state's economy to this day.

Kames Castle, located on the Isle of Bute in Scotland, dates back to the 14th century and was originally built as a fortified tower house. It was associated with the Bannatyne family, who owned the property for centuries and played a significant role in the island’s history. Over time, the castle was expanded and transformed into a more comfortable residence, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. After changing hands several times, Kames Castle and its surrounding estate were used for various purposes, including farming and as private residences. Today, the castle stands as a charming reminder of Bute’s medieval heritage and is privately owned, with parts of the estate repurposed for holiday accommodation.
