On June 19, we commemorate and celebrate the day enslaved Black Americans learned that they were finally free from the atrocities of slavery. There is a common misconception that President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation from January 1, 1863, was the moment that slavery was abolished. However, the news did not reach Texas until June 19, 1865—more than two years later.
It was that moment that June 19 was known as the day that all American citizens were finally free. We celebrate Juneteenth to honor the strength and resiliency of the Black community and amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized.

One of our most unique is The Wheelhouse in Palm Springs, CA, an artistic high-desert retreat formerly owned by TV personality Huell Howser. Honoring the communal spirit encouraged by Howser, this 12-acre oasis has become a place for celebrations, gatherings, and creative retreats. Artists have used the home to write, draw, meditate or practice yoga. Photographers have used the space for creative shoots. And couples have made the retreat their own, taking their vows against the rocky cliffs and desert brush that surround the home.
