New Exhibit - Woop Woop! The designer, Erik Grove-Nielsen, developed the approach after a few accidents in Denmark where turbines spun too quickly, an unsafe situation called overspeed. The idea was that the blade could protect the turbine from overspeed, freeing turbine-makers from engineering a solution. For the most part, it worked and was a big part of the success of the Danish wind turbines of the time.

We take you on a historical tour during the "wind rush" from 40 years ago to today. We've come a long way :)

We have been getting MANY questions about how electricity gets from the wind turbines to homes.

👉First, the electrical journey starts at the generator, runs down the tower to the transformer, and then travels underground at 33000 volts to a wind substation similar to what is on our wind farm.

👉From there, power travels across overhead power lines to the Devers substation (north of Dillion)

👉Other fun facts: Power generated in the San Gorgonio Pass is enough for 250,000 average homes annually. Ten times Palm Springs, three times the Coachella Valley, and a third of Riverside County.

👉Our power is mostly sold to SCE, although the market is created by CAISO, like the commodities or futures markets.
CAISO manages most of the grid in California, which is just one section of the Western Interconnection ("Western Grid").

👉Wind and Solar energy are VARIABLE energy sources. CAISO uses ALL renewable energy and then makes up the demand using DISPATCHABLE sources like Natural gas peaker plants.

👉Not using available renewable power is called curtailment. This can happen if there is too much energy in our area because that leads to other problems.

👉There are FIVE grids total in North America:
-Western
-Eastern
-Texas
-Quebec
-Alaska
