They most common question we get is "why are some spinning and some not?"
There are six possible answers:
1) There is not enough wind. It takes winds of about 6-7 miles per hour to begin producing electricity. At nominal wind speeds, some turbines begin to turn while others remain still because of local wind currents as well as differences between turbines.
2) There is too much wind. Most modern turbines are designed to operate at full capacity in about 25 mph winds. They adjust blade pitch to reduce aerodynamic performance as wind speeds increase above this, using aerodynamics to maintain full capacity to their maximum wind capability, typically around 50 mph wind (known as the cut-out speed). Above this preset limit, a turbine will brake to a stop for safety and to avoid damaging its generator. Slight variations in wind will leave some turning while others
stop.
3) A service condition. If a turbine is not able to produce electricity for any reason—hardware, software, or even routine maintenance—the turbine will be commanded to full-stop.
4) A turbine may be derelict. Like an automobile, turbine owners maintain them until they are no longer cost-effective to operate. Depending on the nature of land-use agreements, they may be left in place as derelict machines. Modern agreements now plan for end-of-life disposal. The costs to remove derelict machines may embedded into the cost of a repower project when new, larger turbines are installed.
5) They have reached their service agreement for the day/week/month
6) There is a grid connection loss.
