Digging a snow pit with to check out the snowpack before skiing! Safety first.

A snow pit is a crucial tool in assessing what we think is going on and verifying it or gathering more information to answer a specific question about the snowpack in that specific location.

Things we are looking for:

1. Spot the Obvious Layers: When you start digging, note the most obvious things you’re seeing in relation to the snow. Problem layers can often be seen or felt as you start to dig out your pit.

2. Identify the differences in the layers: We’ll be observing how layers may look different from on another and visible changes in their density, as well as their relation to each other.

3. Snow stability tests: Once layers are identified within the pit and potentially problematic ones, it’s time to test stability and reactivity. The two most common stability tests are a compression test and an extended column test. These tests will give us a deeper understanding of how all of the layers will interact on the slope.

4. Assess your results and make informed decisions. Each test may reinforce what we thought we understood but it may also change our plans for the day, and that is okay. Slowing down, pivoting, and skiing hard.
