DAD'S BULL
Shot his first elk at fifteen
Idaho primitive, vast and great
Drove into Big Creek with Grandpa
As a sophomore in ‘58
He ran ridges and climbed mountains
Wore Danner boots every day
And if footwear had an odometer
His would’ve turned 100k
He dragged Trent and I
Through brush over hill and dale
We hiked through the Frank each summer
And sometimes used the trail
Revenge was fresh on my mind
Last week we hunted wild game
I knew time had him bested
But time didn’t treat us the same
I said dad I’m gonna repay you
For the hell that you drug me
Cause you just turned eighty
I’m only a year over fifty-three
He said son you ain’t goanna do it
Both hips have been replaced
My shoulders have got new plastic
I’m new by God’s good grace
I’ve traded in my old parts
I’ve got a titanium knee
And a roto rooter job
Finally lets me p*e
This 12 horse power pump
Where my prostate used to lye
Could be used by NASA
To launch rockets in the sky
I’ve circled the sun 8 decades
To me you’re still a pup
Then he ran up the mountain
I hollered Dad please wait up
By the time I finally caught him
The elk was already dead
And though I wanted to shoot it
I was handed a skinning knife instead
It’s not like my wife ran off and left me
For a Subaru and a man bun
But rated next to my father
I’m a zero or at best a one
So don’t underestimate the old guys
For the man you strive to be
Life is just getting started
Cause 80’s the new 23.
