What is safe drinking water?

That is the most important question. We know there are a lot of impurities in bottled water (https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/plastic-particles-bottled-water #:~:text=The%20researchers%20found%20that%2C%20on,mostly%20focused%20on%20larger%20microplastics.) like microplastics, nanoplastics, heavy metals, organic pollutants and synthetic chemicals. Pasadena's water supply (https://pwp.cityofpasadena.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Pasadena-2024-WQ-Report-Web.pdf) complies with all federal and state drinking water standards and they voluntarily monitor for PFAS since 2020 with no detections. And for the record, I enjoy tap water from Pasadena, but what else needs to be tested for safe bottled and tap water?

Senator Portantino SD 25, introduced legislation to test and set safe standards for microplastics in drinking water and bottled water. SB 1147 (https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1147) will be voted on by the full Assembly in August and if it passes will go to a full Senate vote to make sure they agree with the changes. Senator Blakespear, Senator Rubio and Assemblymember's Gipson, Low, and Rendon have joined as co-authors. You can send a message to both of your rep (https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/) s asking for them to support this legislation.

What else can we do? Ban SUP submitted a letter (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JnV1zGrFYTdnyHp6tM67d-agHK-eCQJEpIiO1Px47pw/edit?usp=sharing) to the California legislative portal asking for amendments to the legislation to expand it to include nanoplastics, heavy metals, organic pollutants and synthetic chemicals. You can add these to your request when you contact your reps.

As many of you may know I opened MyZero WasteStore My Zero Waste Store about four years because I was disappointed with the lack of transparency about the management of our waste stream. In California, three plastic products actually get recycled throughout the state (which means 99% of it doesn't) and a freedom of information request by Basel Action Network and showed that every bale of plastic exported from CA was contaminated with non-recyclables and exported illegally to Mexico and other countries where it is mostly illegally dumped and burned. and that is just wrong. We need to reduce our plastic consumption and mandate manufacturers to make non -toxic and non-reactive materials that can be compostable or reuseable. My Zero Waste Store saved almost 10 million pieces of plastic from being made or becoming a pollutant by January 2, 2024. Reuse Works! Climate Champion Products

What does it take to be a climate champion? Locally made is important. Carbon draw down is important. Ingredients that don't deforest large animal habitats or large forests are important. Read on to find out about some of our favorite products that are better for the environment.

Did you know that making soap locally draws down carbon locally? What better way to clean our air and ourselves then supporting local soap makers!!

Further is an amazing company that we would all envy. Plus, Further gives our one gallon containers to restaurants to capture their grease. Further products have an amazingly low carbon footprint.

Zatik is ten miles away from My Zero Waste Store near the Burbank recycling center. They use all organic materials and California oranges to scent both their hand and body wash and Zatik takes back their five gallon containers for reuse. Another great option for the climate!

Made from walnut scraps from an architectural project these risers will sequester carbon in perpetuity. It's all about the climate

The Pasadena Environmental Advisory Commission has been trying to get an Artificial Turf resolution on the agenda for the last several months. Natural landscapes sink carbon, facilitate groundwater capture and promote biodiversity. If LA City can pass a ban on installing artificial turf, this should help influence Pasadena to pass our own legislation to ban and replace Artificial Turf. Last night the East Area Progressive Democrats voted to adopt the Plastic Ban Resolution for the club which acknowledges that there is a plastic crisis and they will strive to not use plastic at meetings and events and will use food and drink vendors that use reusables or compostables! They follow the Democrats of Pasadena Foothills in passing this resolution. Congratulations to both clubs 👏👏

Lot's of Laundry Options!

We'll skip the traditional and affordable laundry detergent (https://www.myzerowastestore.com/product/lightly-scented-green-laundry-detergent/179?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true) that you can refill and the laundry powder (https://www.myzerowastestore.com/product/laundry-detergent-powder/61?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true) that we make in-house since those are so common and focus on our laundry sheets and laundry alternatives.

These sheets are made in the United states, come unscented or scented including fresh linen and lavender, and are minimally packaged in recycled cardboard boxes with algae ink not petroleum-based inks. Did you know you can use Castile soap For a laundry detergent, add 1/3 to 1/2 cup soap per load, and add 1/2 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle. Either of these could be your go-to product for cleaning just about everything in your home!

I think the Hexawash Alternative is the best option for the planet and your pocketbook! I use the pre-wash setting but you can use the short wash setting as well. Either saves you time, water and energy! And because there is no detergent, this product is great for sensitive skin!

Plastics made from PVC, PUR, and LDPE generally leached more toxic chemicals compared to PET and HDPE plastics. Colored and printed plastics tended to be worse than plain ones. And fatty, oily, or acidic foods are more prone to sucking out chemicals from packaging. this article makes me think of two things. I feel like there is a similarity with bees that have been pollinating with microplastics and I have only heard of microplastics breaching the blood barrier to the brain during a study where rats ingested polystyrene. I didn't know that there was a blood barrier to testicles but it makes sense and the fact that microplastics have breached that blood barrier is thought provoking.
