From Denmark, the Helsingør Pigegarde (Elsinore Girls Marching Band) has been blending traditional military music with modern melodies since 1957. Performing at 60 to 80 events annually worldwide, the band has had only three leaders in nearly 65 years. After Major Hansen’s 19-year tenure, Herdis and Karl Koudahl took over, shaping the band’s direction until 2000. Leadership then smoothly transitioned to their daughter, Sanne Koudahl Bergsaker, ensuring the legacy continued. In Denmark, “hygge” (hyoo·guh) signifies a warm, communal togetherness and a cherished sense of comfort and belonging. The Elsinore Girls Marching Band embodies this spirit of “hygge” in their performances.
Billie Jean King, the 2025 Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal, rides in a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III. This model, introduced in 1936, was the last large pre-war Rolls-Royce and the only V12 Rolls-Royce until 1998. With only 721 Phantom III chassis built, it features a 7.32-liter V12 engine with twin ignition, 24 spark plugs and a twin SU electric fuel pump. Known for its luxury and innovation, the Phantom III also has independent front suspension, a 4-speed manual transmission and four-wheel servo-assisted brakes. This was one of the founders of Rolls-Royce, Sir Henry Royce’s last major design, before his passing in 1933. Known for its classic beauty and engineering, this Rolls-Royce Phantom III represents both history and elegance, making it the perfect choice to honor Billie Jean King as Grand Marshal in the 2025 Rose Parade.

The band has participated in various high-profile projects, including the 100th Summer Kōshien promotional song in 2018, a collaboration with J-Pop singer Kalen Anzai in 2019 and the soundtrack for the anime movie “Belle” in 2021. Cal Poly Universities’ 2025 Rose Parade float, “Nessie’s Lakeside Laughs,” captures “The Best Day Ever” as the legendary Loch Ness Monster emerges to join a lakeside celebration with new friends. An estimated 37,000 flowers and natural materials are used on this float. Nessie’s body is textured with green pistachio shells and highlighted by pink carnations and roses. At the float’s front, an eager Scottish terrier wags its tail in a rowboat, followed by the beginnings of Nessie’s tail playfully weaving in and out of the water. The lake is shaded with blue and purple statice, while white irises, roses and baby’s breath mimic foamy ripples. This fully student-built float celebrates the unity of land and lake creatures. Cal Poly students blend innovation and tradition as their newly upgraded animation system brings each scene to life, continuing a legacy of hands-on learning and award-winning designs since 1949.
