The bayou is still active throughout the winter. We have a lot of different birds who use the bayou as a resting stop and a place to get a bite to eat. Others call it home all year round. As a birder we love that it's easier to spot the birds.

Some bird fallout from the other day. High winds, low tide, and hungry birds. If you're wanting to get outside and enjoy some nature during the winter, we still operate all year round. Thanks to living in Texas we are blessed with some mild temperatures in the winter. Get out on the water easily by making reservations from our website. We look forward to seeing you on the water this year.

Too cold to go paddling? Avoid the malls and take a holiday hike with your loved ones out at Armand Bayou Nature Center! They even have the coolest gift shop for all those on your holiday gift list. It's a win-win to help support Houstons only unchannelized bayou (and prairie) in this bayou city! And yes, we are also still open as well. Happy Holidays!

Buck saunters through our coastal tallgrass prairie. As part of our 2,500 acre nature preserve, ABNC meticulously restores and conserves 900 acres of coastal tall-grass prairie. This remnant of historic prairie supports a huge diversity of plants and animals. These native plants and grasses provide critical breeding, nursery, feeding and cover habitat for prairie-dependent wildlife. Photo courtesy of Gary Seloff

A couple of Bald Eagles were seen today on the bayou, along with a lot of other types of birds. The American Bald Eagles eventually returned to the Armand Bayou Watershed after being killed off by ddt many years ago. A mating pair came back about 10 years ago and have continued to breed in the area. There is also a juvenile Bald Eagle flying around somewhere but we didn't see it today.

A Tri-Colored Heron waits patiently for breakfast to swim by. Seeing the wildlife from a kayak provides a different and more personal perspective. I always use a large dry bag when doing photography while kayaking. When I'm not shooting, I leave my camera in a drybag on my lap for quick access. Bird watching from a kayak is always rewarding.

We don't usually see the Common Gallinule while kayaking on Armand Bayou, but we have spotted them this week. We've also been spotting Limpkins and a breeding pair of Bald Eagles with a juvenile. Everyday is something different, so you never know what you'll see. Renting a kayak to bird watch is a great way to get up close.
