Osage-Owned at the VC – Dana Bear, featured artist at the Visitors Center this October, shares how she makes her stylish earrings featuring porcupine quills. Dana’s family sources many of her porcupines from Kansas. Dana extracts the quills directly from the hide using pliers before soaking the quills in Borax and warm water to de-grease them. The finished product is one of her most popular jewelry commissions.

She also shares her experience of being commissioned to create beaded pointe shoes for Misty Copeland during her visit to the Osage Nation Reservation and Dance Maker Academy, a proud moment in honor of the Maria Tallchief Quarter's release last October.

Dana Bear, founder of Tallchief Designs LLC, named after her late mother Angela Tallchief. From the Grayhorse District and Buffalo Bull Face Clan, Bear specializes in wearable art, including both traditional and contemporary designs, which she often blends together for one-of-a-kind creations. As the great-niece of Maria and Marjorie Tallchief, the release of the Maria Tallchief quarter last year by the United States Mint inspired her line of earrings featuring the quarter, which are available for purchase at the Osage Nation’s Visitors Center.

Visitors Center Update
Construction continues on the Osage Nation Visitors Center with a new garage door installed on the Lynn Street side near the coffee shop. On the opposite side of the building, brick pillars, concrete, and the roof have been completed on the back patio where folks can sit and enjoy food and drinks and great company. Excitement from the community also continues as we watch this distinct architecture, designed by Cory Miller and Cherise Lookout Miller at the Osage-owned MIDL Architects, come to life!
