Veraison
A Beautiful Time of Year
This is a French word used in viticulture (wine grape growing) to describe the onset of the ripening of the grapes. Veraison is the transition from berry growth to berry ripening and is well marked by the change in color from green to purple. As seen in the photo, there becomes a rainbow of transitional colors ever so beautiful this time of year.
More about Veraison and other interesting information about wine, grapes and wine regions can be discovered in the book series Exploring Wine Regions. The books are available through books stores, wine shops and on the website ExploringWineRegions.com.
Every year, turtles come back the the very place they were born to dig holes and lay their eggs. They can lay 100 eggs in hopes that one will eventually survive. The risk is several. The eggs can be dug up and eaten. The slow walk to the waves can experience birds feeding on them. In the ocean there are many predators until they reach a size to protect themselves better.
Here, at the tip of Baja Sur Mexico, these turtles have a much greater success of surviving because people have protected their eggs during the 45 days of incubation underground. People also and stand by while these precious little babies they make their walk to the ocean.
This is a very special treat of nature to experience up close.
