Some days it just all comes together. I noticed that a bunch of variables were lining up in our favor, and it was one of those days when I couldn't get out on the water fast enough. Clients Mike and Andrew did their part and put a smackdown on some big New River smallmouth. At the end of the day, our best five fish totaled 100.75". It never ceases to amaze me how many big smallmouth are in this river. We still have limited openings for fall 2024, but keep an eye out for an announcement about booking into 2025.

Stain=Pain

We have gotten back out on the New River and caught some great fish over the past few days. Cool fall temperatures combined with stained water have provided great conditions for power fishing!

Wow, we have been receiving a lot of check-in calls, text, and emails about how we made it thru the storm. Thank you to everyone who is worried about us and our community! It's heartwarming to know we are loved and supported by so many and so here is an update...

The devastation here in Giles Co. along the New is incredible and heartbreaking but all of us here at NROC are safe and sound! Our cabins are fine, too. They are located on a tributary to the river and, while it did come up, it was not what we would consider "that" high for Walker Creek. Our power has been restored as well as our internet. Roads are clear to get to us, most restaurants & stores are open. All in all, we consider ourselves VERY blessed! We are anxious to get back on the river but will not do so until it's 100% safe. If you have upcoming trips, we will be in direct contact with you regarding the status of your trip. Your patience is greatly appreciated!

Many of our friends and neighbors along the New River were not as lucky. Please join us in praying for ALL of those affected by the storm throughout the southeast. We have already had so many of our fishing clients & cabin guests reach out to ask how they can help. Y'all are amazing!

Two of our former guides, Timmy Carbaugh & Greg Rife have been directly impacted. Timmy's parents have lost everything as the river came up 4-feet into their home of 53 years. We are not 100% clear of the status of Greg's family cabin but reports are not good in that area. Probably another total loss. If you would like to donate directly to these two families, you can mail a check to us and 100% will be passed on straight to these men and their families.

Please put "Carbaugh/Rife" in the memo line.

Or, if you'd rather, you can donate to the Giles County Relief Fund that has been set up to help local families and businesses in our area. Again, 100% of these resources will go to people in need, not huge corporations.

Fall is setting in across the New River valley, and some big fish are starting to bite! Cooler weather and some great fishing have made the past couple weeks very enjoyable. Many different baits are producing recently, leading to many clients getting to learn how to fish new patterns. We still have some fall availability, call 540-921-7438 to book!

With summer winding down, we are looking forward to the stretch run of our 2024 smallmouth season! Last year we put some giant smallmouth in the boat during September and October.

September is one of my favorite months because of how dynamic it is. During the beginning of September, we are usually still focusing on our summer patterns. The first half of September is usually good for topwater and our "bug fishing" patterns on both spinning and fly gear. As September continues and the first few cool days and nights start to hit the New River Valley, the "fall feed up" begins! I have noticed that as soon the water temperature starts dropping a lot of our power fishing techniques become quickly more effective. If you are a power fisherman, this is the time for you!

Into October the "fall feed up" is in full swing. The fish try to gain as much weight as they can before the cold weather of November and December. I usually focus on throwing large moving baits as this will elicit reaction strikes from some of the biggest smallmouth in the river. These techniques are what caught both of the giant bass pictured below. October, much like the early spring, is a great time to have a chance at some of the giant smallmouth the New River has to offer.

Fall of 2023 was one to remember, and with how well 2024 has gone so far, I can't wait to see what the fall of 2024 has to offer. Call 540-921-7438 to book today!

One of my favorite times of year is here, bug season! As the water temperature heats up, big fish will hit the banks and shade lines in search of an easy meal. These late-summer smallmouth become highly susceptible to cicada and bug style flies and lures. This is one of my favorite patterns every year because it combines elements of two of my favorite techniques, topwater fishing and sight fishing. This bug pattern can be targeted on both fly and spin techniques and usually peaks from August until about mid-September. If you want to learn more about bug fishing call 540-921-7438 and book a trip today!

The weather has cooled down but the bite is still HOT! Clients Mike and Rob were able to land these three beautiful bass all on topwater, while catching many other fish with a variety of techniques. There is nothing quite like watching a giant smallmouth crush a topwater bait! Come get in on the action this late-summer and fall. Stay tuned to our page later in the week where we will be announcing a new fishing and lodging package with Walker Creek Retreat & Barn!

These brothers absolutely crushed it on their two-day trip this summer on the New River. Topwater was the technique of choice and we caught a ton of bass from the 17-19" and topped out at 21.5". The quality of fish that we have been catching this summer has been awesome, and is a good sign of where the population is at on the New River!

Charlie and Keith put another smackdown on some New River smallmouth. They were able to catch just shy of 90 bass on the first day of their trip. The vast majority were above 15", about 15 were above 18", and two over 20". We tried a few different techniques in the morning, before exclusively fishing topwater for the majority of the day. I have never seen such a topwater frenzy.

They were not satisfied after day one, catching over 60 smallmouth on the second day, including a true New River giant.

I have been very impressed by the state of the fishery on the New River this year. There is a strong size class of bass in the 16-18" range, and another strong class in the 20-21" range. These prevalent size classes have been present in many different stretches and areas of the river. Some true 22+" giants have shown themselves this year too, highlighting the truly giant top end smallmouth the New River has to offer.

We are catching a great combination of quality and quantity this June so far on the New River, and I am looking forward to the late summer and fall. Call 540-921-7438 to book today.
