Day 6 of Native American Heritage Month and Alicia Thomas is presenting another great tour to kids.

The museum welcomes over 2,000 school aged children annually! We are delighted to share with them all the wonderful stories, histories, and cultures of Native peoples. It is especially wonderful to empower our Native youth through these stories and culture. Seeing their eyes light up when they learn more about who and where they come from makes our job even more special. This month and all year long we celebrate Native peoples and lift each and every tribe in respect and gratitude. 🪶

Celebrating the life and legacy of master pine needle basket weaver Loretta Oxendine (Lumbee), who passed away earlier this week. Mrs. Loretta was a longtime friend and supporter of the museum, collaborating on many projects and cultural events throughout the years. A retired elementary school teacher, she found joy in sharing her culture by teaching the tradition of pine needle basketry. She is credited with helping save the pine needle basketry tradition among the Lumbee people.
Mrs. Loretta grew up in the Prospect community of Robeson County and learned to weave pine needle baskets as a young child. Her distinctive style earned her the reputation of a premier basket maker. She and her husband Herman traveled across North Carolina and the southeast selling and demonstrating at powwows, museums, and public and private institutions. Her baskets helped elevate our status as southeastern Native people and reclaim culture and community. Her work has been collected by and displayed at the National Museum of the American Indian, where millions can view her craftsmanship. Other collections include The Museum of the Southeast American Indian, the North Carolina Museum of History, and the Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center. We honor the history, knowledge, stories of kinship, and love of homeland that will forever remain through her beautiful works of art.

For years I have been so humbled to hold space with Native communities and listen to their stories. It has been an incredible honor to share these stories authentically in museums for the public to better understand Native people and to honor our own existence and culture. After 20 plus years of doing this work across Indian Country, so many of the conversations align with similar narratives of resilience and the assertion that we are still here. Aching in their stories are painful emotions of colonialism.

This past Thursday, I interviewed Lumbee ceramicists Phyllis Lowery. Mrs. Phyllis so kindly and genuinely shared her creativity, inspiration, and incredible talent with clay. As her story took the natural turn to the familiar, her emotion pierced my soul. The trauma, the pain, the beauty, and the dignity of her words will stay with me forever. It wasn't just her voice - it was the voice of generations before that are still within her, within us. I struggled to hold back the tears, to reconcile the contemporary rhetoric, to suppress the pain the came up through my body and caused my ears to ring. I will never forget this moment. I will never take for granted the purpose of my work - ever. This clip doesn't capture all of her poignant words. The documentary will share them this spring. Thank you Mrs. Phyllis for all you do and all you have done with clay, especially clay from our river and swamps.

We must respect and honor Native peoples. We have have acknowledge the humanity of our shared experiences with kindness and compassion.

-Nancy
