General information

This part of the Maine coast is a truly special place--the eastern seaboard's best-kept secret. Much of the shoreline here is public land, part of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, a birdwatcher's paradise. An edge-of-the-earth, pristine landscape still survives this far downeast: 4+ hours north of Portland, 2 hours east of Bangor, 45 minutes from the town of Lubec, and 25 minutes from Eastport (where you can catch a passenger ferry to Lubec and Campobello Island, or a car ferry to Deer Island, New Brunswick). Don't let the price fool you. The cabin is clean and comfortable. But it is a classic Maine sporting-camp style accommodation, with no frills, and is priced to reflect that. *You'll need to bring your own linens.* The kitchen/living space is 16x12. It has an attached (16x8) sleeping porch with a full-size bed at one end and a screened eating area at the other end--no glass at that end, just curtains across the screens for privacy (see photo). The cabin sleeps 2 in a full-size bed and has a small futon couch that folds flat to a twin. If you have kids you are more than welcome to squeeze them in any way you like or set up a tent for them. No bathroom: it has an outhouse (see photo: moon and star door) and an outdoor shower on the back deck (see photo). No water view. (We're on a peninsula, but the water is a ΒΌ mile walk, through wildlife refuge land across the road.) The screened porch and the outdoor shower mean that staying in the cabin can feel like the best parts of camping, because of the proximity to the outdoors. You'll wake up to birdsong, and if you step out the door at night you'll be astounded at the depth of the stars, in a place with no light pollution, and the depth of the silence, so far from a major road. But unlike camping, you will have a solid roof over your head, a very nice bed (firm and new), a little kitchen fully equipped with everything you need to make a real meal, a deliciously hot shower, and a deck with a table for outdoor dining. The cabin also has wifi, a small flatscreen TV, and a DVD player. (The TV is just for videos and streaming--it has no cable or reception.) Yellow Birch Farm is totally kid- and pet-friendly, but your dog will need to be on a leash around the farm. Our own family includes two boys ages 10 and 13 who are in charge of feeding the chickens, collecting eggs, and taking care of any other critters we may be raising in the summer. We have a friendly black Lab named Sheba, who loves to play fetch (of course). Rates: $55/night (2-night minimum), $325/week, or $995/month. We accept PayPal, checks, and cash. A nonrefundable deposit for half your stay is required to hold a reservation.
