The popular view is that cruise ships are coronavirus hotspots waiting to sail. I’m no scientist, but after personally having taken dozens of cruises, I know this: there is no cleaner travel environment than a modern cruise ship. Cleaning is a fe**sh aboard cruise ships, and you won’t fail to see some crewmember cleaning something aboard your ship on every single day of your voyage.

Cruise ships calling at U.S. ports are subject to unannounced health and cleanliness checks by the U.S. Public Health Service (ironically a division of CDC) and ranked according to cleanliness. If only that were the case for some of the hotels in which I’ve stayed.Cruise ships calling at U.S. ports are subject to unannounced health and cleanliness checks by the U.S. Public Health Service (ironically a division of CDC) and ranked according to cleanliness. If only that were the case for some of the hotels in which I’ve stayed.

Millions of people take cruises every year, or at least they did prior to the pandemic, and often come back for more. There is currently demand, and if CDC allowed it, there would be more cruises sailing with guests now.

THE RIVERS ARE CALLING
Feel the rhythmic pulse of the paddlewheel, and indulge in the mesmerizing beat of jazz as the gentle tempo of the Mississippi river’s own currents play overture to the experience. Dine on cuisines born along the riverbanks from as many cultures as the river has tributaries, and immerse yourself in river lore. You're invited to discover famous American landmarks and backwoods roadhouses. Attend the theater without stepping ashore. Embark on a uniquely American river cruise and return with more than memories. Stand on the bow as landing by landing, bend by bend, America reveals itself.

The upper reaches of the Mississippi River offer the opportunity to explore the territory that served as Mark Twain’s muse. The river stretches north toward country that’s almost as wild and beautiful as it must have been during his lifetime, and, still enlivened by the coming and going of rivercraft, this course of travel offers adventure for all who embark upon it.

Enjoy your Mississippi River cruise aboard an authentic steam boat. Give me a call for more information.

In a letter to Assistant Secretary of State Carl Risch, addressed on Friday, American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) president and CEO Zane Kerby calls for the swift resumption of the U.S. passport processing system, which has been suspended for all but "life-and-death emergencies" since March 19.

Royal Caribbean Will Return to Service Without Buffets Onboard

As the conversation about what the ocean cruise experience will look like post-COVID-19 continues, Royal Caribbean gave some hints about some practical onboard changes it's considering.
Last week, in a conversation with Vicki Freed, Royal’s senior vice president of sales and trade support and service, Royal Caribbean president and CEO Michael Bayley said that the cruise line will not have a buffet when it initially returns to sailing.
“In the beginning, there will not be a buffet,” he said. “That is how I see it.”
Bayley expects the line’s signature buffet, the Windjammer, to change into something more like a traditional restaurant than a buffet.
“We will utilize the space, we will utilize the Windjammer, but in all probability, it won’t be a classical buffet. It will be something more akin to a restaurant.” Bayley said.
That change is just one of the changes expected to take place on a lot of the ocean-going ships when service resumes to ensure that guests feel healthy and safe while cruising, though Royal has not made any official announcements about other changes that it plans to make.
Right now, Royal, and the rest of the U.S. ocean cruise lines, are in a holding pattern, waiting for the Centers for Disease Control’s April extension to its “No Sail” order for all cruise ships. That order is currently due to expire in mid-July (July 18).
At the moment, Carnival Cruise Line is one of the only major ocean cruise lines to announce a return to service—Carnival said it would look to sail again out of three ports starting on Aug. 1, though it said that any return to service is still subject to the CDC

A recent study found that travelers are surprisingly willing to travel in the near future despite the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

According to a Harris Poll breaking down the attitude of Americans toward the viral pandemic right now and moving forward, one of the focuses was to determine how long it will be before travelers feel comfortable hitting the road again.

The airline industry was one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, but 37 percent of respondents said they would travel via airplane within three months of government officials announcing the flattening of the curve. Another 57 percent would fly within the first six months and only 22 percent would wait a full year.

As for the cruise industry, which has been almost completely shut down by the pandemic, 25 percent of Americans surveyed said they would sail on a cruise within three months of being allowed. An astounding 39 percent would return to sailing within six months and 30 percent would wait one year.

Expect “Significant Delays” in Renewing Passport State Department Says

Due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the U.S. State Department says it is “only able to offer in-person service at passport agencies or centers for customers with a qualified life-or-death emergency and who need a passport for immediate international travel within 72 hours.”

While you can still apply in person for a U.S. passport at some acceptance facilities and renew through the mail, the State Department says you should expect significant delays receiving your passport and your citizenship evidence documents. It adds to consider waiting to apply until the State Department resumes normal operations. Expedited service was suspended on March 19 and this service is currently not being offered to any applicants.

If you applied and requested expedited service on or before March 19, 2020, the State Department says it will make “every effort to meet” its commitment to the two- to three-week, door-to-door service. If you applied and requested routine service on or before March 19, 2020, you should expect significant delays receiving your passport and your citizenship evidence documents.

Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel

Global Health Advisory
March 19, 2020

Level 4: Do Not Travel

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.

On March 14, the Department of State authorized the departure of U.S. personnel and family members from any diplomatic or consular post in the world who have determined they are at higher risk of a poor outcome if exposed to COVID-19 or who have requested departure based on a commensurate justification. These departures may limit the ability of U.S. Embassies and consulates to provide services to U.S. citizens.

For the latest information regarding COVID-19, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.

You are encouraged to visit travel.state.gov to view individual Travel Advisories for the most urgent threats to safety and security. Please also visit the website of the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate to see information on entry restrictions, foreign quarantine policies, and urgent health information provided by local governments.

Travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency. The Department uses these Alerts to convey information about terrorist threats, security incidents, planned demonstrations, natural disasters, etc. In an emergency, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate or call the following numbers: 1(888) 407-4747 (toll-free in the United States and Canada) or 1 (202) 501-4444 from other countries or jurisdictions.

If you decide to travel abroad or are already outside the United States:
•Consider returning to your country of residence immediately using whatever commercial means are available.
•Have a travel plan that does not rely on the U.S. Government for assistance.
•Review and follow the CDC’s guidelines for the prevention of coronavirus.
•Check with your airline, cruise lines, or travel operators regarding any updated information about your travel plans and/or restrictions.
•Visit travel.state.gov to view individual Travel Advisories for the most urgent threats to safety and security.
•Visit our Embassy webpages on COVID-19 for information on conditions in each country or jurisdiction.
•Visit the Department of Homeland Security’s website on the latest travel restrictions to the United States
