One day until we arrive in Malawi! OK to be truthful, I forgot to post one day before. But since we missed our connection in Ethiopia and have to spend the night, it’s still one day till we get there! Allow the universe to work things out for you - Africa sometimes requires more flexibility and patience, but I learned they find a way to make it work!

Final Touches: 3 days until our Malawi arrival! 💼 Double-checking plans and ensuring every detail is in place for a successful trip. Heather and I have been working hard in the background to make sure that we are not only prepared for this trip to Malawi but also that we are prepared to share our experience with you. 4 days until Malawian food! 🍽️ Malawian food is always freshly harvested and cooked! Four foods I’m looking forward to: 1) maize nsima (corn dough) with fish, tomatoes and greens, 2) mandasi (fried dough balls), 3) fresh plantain chips from the bus stop, 4) roasted maize from a roadside grill!

5 days until we arrive in Malawi! Have you heard of the "Big Five"? It refers to five major African species that people often try to see on safari. Lion. Leopard. Elephant. Rhino. Buffalo. Liwonde National Park has all of these! Malawi's parks are managed by African Parks, an amazing non-profit that manages parks across the Continent, allowing for best practices, community integration, and coordination. They've reintroduced cheetahs, lions, rhinos and wild dogs (personally one of my favorite animals) since 2017. Can't wait to go see what they're doing at Liwonde!

In 6 days we will make our first stop in Lilongwe, one of six towns we are visiting in Malawi. Lilongwe is the capital city in the Central Region. Mzuzu is a large town in the Northern Region. Blantyre is the largest city in the country, in the Southern Region. Liwonde is a national park in the Southern Region, with great wildlife viewing. I've never been to Rumphi area before, which is on a plateau north of Mzuzu. Kande will be our beach destination!

Seven days until we arrive in Malawi! We are practicing our Chichewa, a language spoken by between 7 to 12,000,000 people in Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Up at the lake, where Kerry taught, the people speak another language, Chitonga, between themselves. Even if you don’t speak much, it helps to know the greetings in a few different languages.

Seven days until we arrive! We are practicing some Chichewa, a language spoken by between 7-12 million people in Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. It’s Malawi’s national language (English is the “official language”). Where Kerry taught by the lake, the people speak another language, Chitonga, amongst themselves. Even if you don’t speak much, it’s helpful to know the basic greetings in a few languages. #

It's awesome to see so many of my students grown up with families of their own. I'm hoping to see Tasiyana and Juliana, who were students in my sixth grade class. I personally tutored students three afternoons a week, and Tasiyana saw marked improvement in her math skills with my and her parents' help - that year she placed 12th out of about 70 students in the final exams!

10 days until we arrive in Malawi! One of our goals on this trip is to hand out 10 compost books to interested Malawians. Compost would provide a source of fertilizer for family farms while helping to address the lack of a trash system. You might remember we started a compost project in Malawi in 2022 - but it didn't work out! On this trip, we hope to connect with potential entrepreneurs to fund up to ten new compost businesses! Businesses will be eligible after they read the information and initiate a discussion with us. Looking forward to transforming the fertilizer market in Malawi and potentially East Africa!

She believed in my vision and helped me launch Slade Unlimited as my Chief Marketing Officer. She's a pro at planning and hosting events, and directing social strategy and operations. She's coming with to Malawi to help with content, ideas and driving! She's also hoping to do some cooking for the people!

We are looking forward to seeing so many people in Malawi soon! Martha was the woman who did the laundry for the volunteer lodge where I stayed in 2005. She is such a hard worker, and one of her children was in my 6th grade class. I helped her son with high school fees, and he's now in South Africa trying to make a living. Last time I visited, her family was taking care of a newborn baby boy who was born to a mentally disabled mother. I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Why Malawi? Malawi is a beautiful, peaceful country with some of the friendliest people in the world. Known as the "Warm Hearth of Africa," it is home to the world's seventh largest lake, Lake Nyasa in the Rift Valley (where the Continent is splitting in two). In 2005 when I was searching for a place in Africa to volunteer, a small British charity offered a position teaching at an elementary school in a village by the lake. I fell in love with living in nature without electricity, being visited by merchants selling eggs, rolls, tomatoes, and daily conversations with the people living around me.

There were two big problems that led to our compost idea - the lack of trash services, and the need for fertilizer for farms (which usually is expensive imported chemical fertilizer.) Great news! The compost is composting as we speak!

Buy paintings by our partner Moses, from Kande Beach, Malawi. Moses supports his parents and siblings with his income from his paintings and he depends on tourist trucks to come to Kande Beach to buy his art, and he recently told us that there are few tourists.

Do you want to see his art? Just check the paintings on his left! The above one is inspired by the women (and men) who often carry things on their heads in Africa. It's usually quite convenient because it leaves at least one hand free, but your neck muscles will get tired if you aren't used to it though! The other painting is representing the animals from their national parks with elephants, lions, rhinos, and other classic African animals.
