This Friday, we're excited to highlight a local business very near and dear to us: Campo's Philly Cheesesteaks! This business has changed faces since its opening in West Philly in 1947 but remained family owned to this day, now specializing in hoagies, burgers (including the Impossible Burger, made from plants), and, of course, the cheesesteak. We asked Mike Jr., general manager and great grandson of founder Ambrose Campo, a few questions about what he and the fam have been up to during these difficult times for local businesses. Here they are:

The only way we know how to deal: going to work and hoping for the best.

𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧?

I've been passing the time by exploring Philly's green spaces. My search for green spaces isn't as glamorous as you might think, because fishing is my main focus! I learned that the prized sport fish Striped Bass migrate up the Delaware river to spawn, in the exact location they were spawned years before. During April and May, you can catch a huge fish out of the Delaware, so I have been to places like Hog Island, the Fairmount Water Works on the Schuykill River, and the Navy Yard.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐨’𝐬?

I'd recommend exploring Fairmount Park (shoutout to Fairmount Park Conservancy) and the Mural Arts Philadelphia program. Both of which would take three lifetimes to see all of it!

Mike also wanted us to let everyone know that Campo's is offering free food for anybody who has been financially affected or laid off of work: all you need to do is say that you're out of work, and the meal is 100% free!

𝐀 𝐒𝐧𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐭: Philly's Ellis Island

There's a small stretch of riverside property that offers a beautiful respite for many South Philadelphians. And while it’s small, this was Philadelphia’s busiest immigration station on the Delaware River from 1870, until it was torn down in 1915. The station was an entry point for millions of immigrants, especially coming in droves from eastern and southern Europe.

The former Philadelphia History Museum at Atwater Kent featured illustrations of pier-side scenes, vendors and fee collectors and even brides getting married on the spot so they could enter the country legally!

Today, Washington Avenue Green has been restored to its state prior to serving as an immigration station. A path winds through bursting sprays of purple asters and beggar-ticks with red mulberry and princesstrees overhead. South of the path patiently sits, awaiting a new life, the decaying 1950's SS United States, the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, while to the north, the famous Battleship New Jersey is anchored.

My 18-month-old son has kept me busy during quarantine. He and I have discovered walking trails and historic sites in the western suburbs of Philly. I've also been listening to Philly-centric podcasts like Philly Who?, which highlights influential people who have reshaped the city over the last 10 to 15 years.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞?

One of the iconic places in Philly is the Reading Terminal Market, but its iconic status does not completely protect it from the effects of the COVID crisis. With over 80 vendors inside this mammoth market, it takes a lot of customers to keep the shops open. This market is a huge piece of the fabric of Philly and provides local and guests with a wide range of multi-ethnic foods, fresh produce, locally made crafts, and so much more. I'm a museum buff. Even though history is my main passion, Philly is also known for our art and science institutions. Two of my favorites are Penn Museum and Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. These places are amazing! Egyptian mummies, Babylonian headdresses, and ancient Chinese crystals are just a few examples of what's on display at the Penn Museum, while the Mutter has the liver and plaster cast of the original Siamese twins as well as fragments of Einstein's brain...how cool is that?! With so many museums in Philly, it's nearly impossible to recommend one to a guest, but these two are at the top of my list.
