The Clark featured the engaged and engaging work of Haitian American artist Kathia St Hilaire in a solo show, Invisible Empires. This is following the exhibit of another Haitian artist in 2022, Tomm El-Saieh, Imaginary City.
Yes, The Clark has a great permanent collection including impressionist paintings, but for the past 3 years Robert Weisenberger and his team have featured the work of contemporary artists lesser known to the general public, art that enriches and broadens one’s frame of reference. Opus 40 is a mystical sculpture located on a 63-acre property, an old quarry in the Hudson Valley.
Harvey Fite started working on this monumental sculpture in the late 1930s.
With the support of his wife Barbara Fairbanks, Fite created what became OPUS 40 (officially named in 1964) with little help from the outside, making this achievement - Fite estimated it would take him 40 years - even more impressive.

Henbo Henning is a tattooist, illustrator, animator, and painter. His work is heavily influenced by Traditional and Japanese tattooing. Henning’s world is inhabited with strange creatures: octopuses, polliwogs, axolotls, monsters great and small, real or fictional. These imaginary characters come alive whether on a piece of paper, skin, canvas, textile, wall, or on a screen.

Cherkaoui and Le Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve offered a delightful program at Jacob’s Pillow. Cherkaoui’s choreographed Faun was a magical moment, of sheer beauty, grace, emotion and evocation, with the stage opening up to the stunning views at the Pillow at sunset! This was a reminder of the extraordinary nature of live performances, that nothing can replace!

For almost two years, young and old visitors, guests, and members with no special skills gathered around our community table, volunteering their time to make hundreds of pom poms from plastic shopping bags which could not otherwise be used following the long overdue ban on plastic bags.
Coco Gang created the fluffy animals from a frame made of wood, wire, felt, and PVC. The sheep may graze on firm ground or are also light enough to be hung from the ceiling, floating like mobiles.

The exhibition “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism” explores the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life. Through some 160 works of painting, sculpture, photography, film, and ephemera, explore the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s–40s in New York City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration, when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South.
Featured artists include Charles Alston, Aaron Douglas, Meta Warrick Fuller, William H. Johnson, Archibald Motley, Winold Reiss, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, and Laura Wheeler Waring. These artists are shown in direct juxtaposition with portrayals of international African diasporan subjects by European counterparts ranging from Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, and Pablo Picasso to Germaine Casse, Jacob Epstein, and Ronald Moody.”

It is at last the Met’s celebration of Black artists of the 20th century previously left in the shadow of their white contemporaries, and for too many left in obscurity.
Yes, it is about racism and representation, but the show goes beyond the obvious and explores the complexities and nuances of the Black artist movement of that time, touching on differing visions, on colorism and sexuality.

Born in Indiana, he cut his teeth on Nirvana records and began learning guitar at age 14. Around that time, he was also drawn into Indianapolis’s eclectic DIY art and music scene, frequenting house shows and underground venues. His appreciation of a wide variety of music allowed him to gather inspiration from many genres, such as Hip Hop, Metal and Punk, before settling into his own unique style of ragged, heart-wrenching blues-folk. FRIEDAcommunity excursion: Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams Haute Couture has been part of art museum collections for a very long time, at least on this side of the Atlantic. For reference, the Costume Institute at The Met in NY, came to light in 1946, becoming a curatorial department of the Met in 1959. Community Art installation: In March 2020, the FRIEDA community began a collaborative art project that created by hand 20,000 blue butterflies, enough to form a protective canopy over the building entrance and a flickering overhead lattice for the interior space. More than 60 community members contributed to this project that uses rare blue butterflies as symbols of transformation, renewal, freedom, and luck to capture the essence of FRIEDA. While most of nature’s adult butterflies live only a few weeks and none live more than a year, FRIEDA’s flutter of resilient blue butterflies is entering its fifth season; we hope they will be remembered even longer. We celebrate their fortitude and strength, which sustained them through rain, wind, heat, and snow. The blue butterflies are now merging with this year’s flutter of 7,500 new specimens, again created by community volunteers. We combined blue – symbol of peace and serenity – with red – symbol of love – to add a purple family swarming.
