FRIEDA for generations

FRIEDA for generations At FRIEDA, we have one driving goal: to create genuine connections between people of all generations and all social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

FRIEDA offers breakfast, brunch/lunch, a dinner meal plan + private events: https://friedaforgenerations.com

FRIEDAcommunity organizes workshops and happenings centered in the arts, culture, and entertainment: https://frieda.community We invite you to our safe and inclusive space to interact with people. Join us for breakfast, brunch/lunch, or a special celebration. Our Paris-trained chef, David,

and the FRIEDA multigenerational kitchen and baking team from neighborhoods across Philadelphia will craft for you a European-inspired menu, infused with care and love. And FRIEDA nourishes you beyond food. You are also welcome to learn and discover through our variety of enriching workshops and happenings centered in the arts, culture, and entertainment, all organized by FRIEDAcommunity. At FRIEDA, we dedicate as much attention to the diverse individuals that make up our community as we do to the dishes we serve. In 2019, we created a Dinner Meal Plan as a service to people who are less mobile, especially during winter. As neighbors, we look out for each other - whether with a meal or a chat or a chance to laugh and learn together. Whatever you spend at FRIEDA helps strengthen this community. You make it possible for FRIEDA to create fair-wage jobs, provide group healthcare to employees, hire or engage retirees, all while offering – at no cost – our space for curated art exhibitions, installations, and many FRIEDAcommunity activities. Come for a delicious and fun experience! All we ask is that you have an open mind and treat the space, our team, and each other with respect. Discover what FRIEDA can be for you!

“… My “Burmese Days” series is inspired by the rich textiles of Burma (Myanmar), where I lived from 2006 to 2010. That inspiration came from the shape of pleated skirts, which are common in a region of Burma, when they are laid flat or flared out in a full spin. I explore the beauty and meaning of these fabrics through relief prints and monoprints on Burmese handmade mulberry paper, and I add stitching by hand. …”

“As a storyteller, I draw from my experiences and travels to create abstract art reflecting diverse cultures and histories. My work explores color atmospheres that evoke comfort and narrative. Using a contemporary approach to printmaking, I focus on improvisation and layering, finding freedom in transforming paper. I also draw inspiration from engraving and etching, showcasing a wide spectrum of color.

My “Burmese Days” series is inspired by the rich textiles of Burma (Myanmar), where I lived from 2006 to 2010. That inspiration came from the shape of pleated skirts, which are common in a region of Burma, when they are laid flat or flared out in a full spin. I explore the beauty and meaning of these fabrics through relief prints and monoprints on Burmese handmade mulberry paper, and I add stitching by hand.

My pieces hint at how these clothes are worn, washed, faded by the sun, lashed by rain, torn, repaired, and worn again. I aim to reflect the lifespan of a skirt from the intricacies of the original sewing to the repairs, often crude, that add layers of color and interest. I want to show that these deeply valued textiles bear witness to the lives of the women who grow, play, work, celebrate, and die within them. My work challenges the viewer to imagine moments of these lives – from the special to the mundane.”

More than 50 community members came to see a sold out projection of “Mr. Gaga” (2015).
What a great introduction to our next excursions to see Batsheva’s “Momo” at BAM!

Ohad Naharin’s Gaga movement, his tenure at Batsheva and collaboration with dancers, including dancer, choreographer and spouse Mari Kajiwara, have influenced modern dance as we know it.

“A safe place”

To cap FRIEDAcommunity’s 4 weekly STUFFED Creative writing workshops with Mightywriters in Germantown we all met at FRIEDA for a reading to celebrate the original work of 3rd to 5th graders and some FRIEDAcommunity members.

For one afternoon, we gathered in a place that felt like home to everyone, with kids playing, enjoying hot chocolate, churros, tea sandwiches, and adults chatting, and getting to know each other.

Last session of a successful pilot program of STUFFED outreach at Mighty Writers’ Germantown center.
Thank you Bryanna, Naomi and Grace for giving FRIEDAcommunity volunteers the opportunity to engage wonderful 3rd to 5th graders in creative writing based on P. W. Prichett’s STUFFED characters.
We are looking forward to doing more in 2025!
See you at FRIEDA on Saturday 18 January for the reading!

12/16/2024

The current show at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, “Elizabeth Cattlet: A Black Revolutionary Artist and All That It Implies” will be the highlight of FRIEDAcommunity excursion exploring museum exhibitions for 2024.

Yes, we saw many landmark exhibitions this year with FRIEDAexcursion, Henry Taylor at The Whitney, The Harlem Renaissance at The Met among others... or individually Mickalene Thomas at The Barnes or Times is Always Now at PMA, both shows still for viewing.

This retrospective of Elizabeth Cattlet Mora at The Brooklyn Museum of Art touched, moved, and made each one of us think and reflect. This was like discovering a gem.

Let’s hope that a film-maker, as talented as she was, would tell her story to a broader audience than museum-goers!

FRIEDAcommunity Volunteer Appreciation Day 2024

Without our hands-on volunteers and generous donors our FRIEDAcommunity would not be what it is!

Today, we wanted to thank our volunteers!
Some of you have been with us from day one, then along the way, some of you walked in FRIEDA and equally felt at home, and jumped in to help... Thank you for all that you do!
This is a token of FRIEDAcommunity’s appreciation. And for all the volunteers who could not attend this surprise field trip, we look forward to celebrating with you next year!

With gratitude and love, always.

FRIEDAcommunity excursion: Still/Here by Bill T. Jones

30 years after its premiere, FRIEDAexcursion attended at BAM, the revival of Bill T.

Jones’s groundbreaking and then-highly controversial multimedia dance theater work.

The piece was created during the AIDS epidemic, one of the most contentious and terrifying periods of US history, Still/Here breaks boundaries between the personal and the political, exemplifying a form of dance theater that is uniquely American. At the heart of the piece are “survival workshops” which Jones conducted across the country with people living with life-threatening illness. The participants are the essence of the piece: their gestures inform the choreography, their words the lyrics, their images the stage; they will always be Still/Here, and this work exists to honor their strength.
