This memorial pays tribute to the thousands of Continental Army Soldiers buried in Washington Square Park during the Revolutionary War. This Memorial Day, the Spirits of '76 Ghost Tour is remembering these soldiers and all others who sacrificed for American Freedom.

Happy Mother's Day from the Spirits of '76 Ghost Tour!

Did you know that Mother's Day was started here in Philadelphia? Anna Jarvis first celebrated Mothers' Day in 1908. The holiday was championed by Philadelphia department store magnate John Wanamaker and eventually was named an official holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.

Jarvis is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, just outside of Philadelphia.

On this day in history in 1743, American Founding Father Thomas Jefferson was born.

Jefferson spent many years in Philadelphia including many presiding over the Senate as Vice President in Congress Hall. In Jefferson's time, the runner up in the Presidential Election became Vice President, meaning Jefferson had to serve under his rival John Adams as his Vice President after losing to him in the election of 1796. They must have been some very frustrating years for Jefferson as some say his spirit still haunts this building!

On this day in 1776, General Washington and his men successfully completed the crossing of the Delaware River and marched into Trenton, New Jersey, achieving a resounding victory over the Hessians. Before the battle of Trenton, Washington's Army was on the verge of collapse. The victory at Trenton, while small in size, greatly inspired American soldiers and attracted new recruits to the Patriotic cause.
