Here’s a last photo drop from Bali and Jakarta including the Taman Ayu Temple, Tanah Lot Temple built on the edge of the Indian Ocean, and the Ulun Dalu Beratan Temple, a beautiful temple on the shores of Lake Beratan. The parks and grounds near the temple are idyllic and it would be easy to spend a day here relaxing, enjoying the beauty wit a picnic lunch.

In Jakarta, some of the places visited include the National Museum, National Monument which has a great historical overview of Indonesia via a diorama room (I had no idea the Dutch occupied Indonesia for approximately 350 years), Istiqlal mosque and Jakarta Cathedral which are across the street from each other, Chinatown and one of the oldest Tao Temples in Indonesia, Old town which is known as Batavia, a puppet studio where we got to talk with the puppet maker and watch a shadow puppet show 😂, the Sunda Kelapa Harbor where we got to see that Jakarta city is sinking and is below sea level. Our guide informed us that the city is sinking at a rate of approximately 3 inches per year.

The Indonesian people are some of the kindest, most welcoming and gracious people I have come across. The customer service in Bali is unsurpassed and should be a role model of what customer service should be. The culture of the country is a melding of so many cultures and religions that coexist to make this such a wonderful and welcoming place. In Jakarta we often had locals asking where we’re from and asking to have their photos taken with us.
The things I learn from travel are incredible. Traveling allows me to learn about history, people and cultures while having incredible experiences along the way.

The Bali swing is a very popular photo op destination which draws tourists from all over. I hadn’t planned on doing this (it’s not really my kind of thing) but when our group was taken there, I figured I should try it to be able to answer customer questions and be able to speak to the experience first hand, as well as promote a different type of attraction in Bali.

The operation at this tourist spot is very efficient. You arrive, get presented with different package options: photos taken with your phone is the base package from which you can add a dress rental (they have them in various colors in adult and children’s size) and/or lunch.

From there, you go to the changing room to change into your dress (if you choose to rent a dress).
There are a few gals who help customers with the dresses—they know what they’re doing! They twist and wrap the fabric in a way to make the dresses look good on various body sizes and types.

After that, you wait in line at the various photo areas which include swings, swinging benches, still platforms, etc. The guys at each photo platform secure you in place (there are required harnesses on the swings and swinging benches) to avoid any accidents as you glide through the air above a cliff and river. It’s very scenic—a perfect spot for photos. 🥰 If you have a fear of heights, the big swings are a bit nerve wracking. 😂

I was surprised at how involved the entire experience was and how long it takes to get photos at the various stations. We had to leave before we completed them but I felt the experience was very worthwhile. We went in the morning and it was surprising how many people were there already—we are traveling during off-season so I can only imagine how busy it is during peak season!

If you decide to do this experience with the rented dress, stay hydrated. This is tropical Bali, hot, and humid. Add a long synthetic dress to the mix and you’ll see just how hot it can get. Needless to say, I downed a few bottles of water after that activity! 🤣

We visited the UNESCO world heritage site of Jatiluwih, the famous Balinese rice terraces where organic rice is grown in picturesque terraced rice fields with the mountains as a backdrop. In addition to taking photos of the area from above the rice terraces, there are various points where you can walk down paths into the rice terraces. As you walk along these paths, there are small structures housing cows which produce the natural fertilizer used to grow the organic rice, as well as small structures where the farmers can rest and eat during the work day, and kiosks where you can purchase drinks, snacks, products produced by the farmers, etc.
If I come back outside of rainy season (when it rains, it’s a torrential downpour so planning your activities accordingly is important), I would love to spend a morning hiking/walking through the rice terraces, enjoying the peacefulness and scenic beauty, supporting the local farmers, and getting some exercise.

Doesn’t that sound like a fun morning activity?? 😃

We visited the Besakih Temple built between the 8th and 11th century, taking over 300 years to build. Getting to the Besakih Temple requires climbing up the slopes of Mount Agung (wear good shoes as it can be slick). It is the largest, holiest, and most important temple in Bali. It was an amazing experience to go to the temple with our guide. We then went to Kertha Gosa located in Semarapura, the ancient Balinese court of law. If a matter did not get resolved in the central structure, it was then deferred to the king for final ruling. Bali has a rich history and culture. The people here are so kind, warm, and gracious.

We’re in the inland mountain area of Bali and staying near the town of Ubud. We have been visiting many inland areas. We drove through a bamboo forest, visited a coffee plantation, had lunch overlooking rice fields, and saw Mount Agung, a volcano which is the tallest mountain in Bali. We stopped in Penglipuran, an ancient Balinese village that has maintained the traditional way of life and culture. It is a quaint, beautiful and welcoming village where time stands still while you’re there.

So much to see…
