The crest of the Great Smoky Mountains runs in an unbroken chain of peaks that rise more than 5,000 feet for over 36 miles. Elevations in the park range from 876 to 6,643 feet. Mount LeConte, seen here, is the park’s third-highest peak (6,593 feet). Do you know what the highest peak is? Here’s a hint: at the top of the mountain, sits a 45-foot high observation tower with a sweeping 375 foot long ramp for visitors to reach the tower.

As continues, we want to highlight two of Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s operational grist mills. Mingus Mill, in the photo above, is located near Oconaluftee Visitor Center. Mingus Mill was built in 1886 and uses a water-powered turbine instead of a water wheel to power all of the machinery in the building. Located at its original site, Mingus Mill stands as a tribute to the test of time, with some help from our talented maintenance staff! If you visit now through November, you can see a miller demonstrating the process of grinding corn into cornmeal onsite.

Cable Mill, located in Cades Cove, provides another opportunity to experience a working mill staffed by an on-site miller through November. The mill is about one-fourth the size of Mingus Mill, but is still a mighty grist mill and can produce three bushels (150 pounds) of meal per hour when water hits its wheel at full surge. A grist mill grinds grain into flour. Grist is grain that has been separated from its chaff in preparation for grinding.

Keeping historic structures like grist mills preserved poses many challenges given the popularity of the park. We encourage every visitor to and appreciate the buildings without harming them. Carving into walls, or leaving trash in or around the buildings, are acts that disrupt other’s ability to connect with the beauty and history of the structures.

Tomorrow marks the first vehicle-free day of 2021 on the Cades Cove Loop Road! After a well-received introduction last summer, the pilot program has been extended, starting tomorrow, May 5th, through September 1st. Every Wednesday, walkers, runners, and cyclists alike will have the full day to experience the Cove without hazards that vehicle traffic brings.

Only park in designated areas. Roadside parking poses a safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists on the road with motor vehicles while trying to get to the Loop Road and damages plant and animal habitat. Avoid the morning rush by planning your trip for the afternoon when parking is often more available.

Come prepared. Make sure everyone in your family has a helmet (if biking), water, snacks, sun protection, a rain jacket, and a first-aid kit. While only children under the age of 16 are required to wear a helmet by law, we strongly recommend all cyclists to wear helmets.

Be alert. Other visitors, bikes, or wildlife may be blocked from view when rounding turns. Always walk your bikes when signs indicate; hills with twists and turns are treacherous, especially when wet.

Are you planning on tackling the Loop on foot? Remember to keep to the right-hand side so that others may pass. Cut across Sparks or Hyatt Lane for a shorter route if you do not wish to trek the full 11 miles.
