Newfound Gap, situated at the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, sits at an elevation of 5,046 feet. This area often experiences early snowfall, creating a striking contrast with the autumn foliage.

The misty atmosphere typical of the Smokies is especially pronounced here, contributing to the park's name. This natural phenomenon occurs when vegetation releases v***r that scatters blue light from the sky.

Newfound Gap offers panoramic views and serves as a starting point for several hiking trails. It's also a stop along the Appalachian Trail, which stretches for 74 miles within the park boundaries.

Mid-October Early Fall Colors Along Newfound Gap Road

Newfound Gap Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers some of the best views of fall foliage.

The road connects Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina, stretching about 33 miles through the park. It's known for its numerous scenic overlooks, including the Newfound Gap, which sits at 5,046 feet elevation and provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

For those planning a visit, it's good to know that weather can vary significantly between the lower and higher elevations along the road. Temperatures can be 10-20 degrees cooler at the highest points compared to the base.

The Great Smoky Mountains are home to over 100 species of native trees, contributing to the diverse palette of autumn colors visible from Newfound Gap Road.

Located just two blocks off of Parkway in a cul-de-sac, you’ll have easy access to all of the action the area has to offer while still being tucked away from the noise and hustle/bustle. This unit has been updated with new floors, fresh paint, and all new furnishings. Foothills Retreat will accommodate up to 6 comfortably with a king size bed in the bedroom, queen size sleeper sofa in the living area, and queen size Murphy bed in the dining area. There is a fully equipped kitchen that has all of the essentials if you plan on dining in. Take a break and relax in the whirlpool bath tub in master bedroom. The living room and bedroom both have Roku smart TVs as well as standard cable for you to enjoy. Keyless entry is available for ease of access.
