THE BLOODY BLACKBERRY CREEK ELECTION OF 1882

Ellison Hatfield, brother of Devil Anse Hatfield, was born in 1843 and died from as many as 26 stab wounds and a gunshot in a drunken and violent exchange with Tolbert, Pharmer and Randolph "Bud" McCoy, Jr. on Election Day, Aug. 9, 1882.

Afterwards, Tolbert, Pharmer, and Bud were captured by Devil Anse and the Hatfields. Once Ellison died from his wounds, the three McCoys were tied to pawpaw bushes on the Kentucky side of the Tug River and shot firing-squad-style.

According to family lore, Ellison served in the Confederate Army for four years and eventually rose to the rank of first lieutenant. He was in the Battle of Gettysburg, and was present at Appomattox on April 9, 1865 when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, leader of the Union Army.

A SAD ENDING FOR A FAMILY PATRIARCH: This heart-breaking image was taken during the solemn funeral services conducted for Randolph "Ol' Ran'l" McCoy (October 30, 1825 – March 28, 1914).

For some McCoys, it seemed that this was the unexpected end to an era. Ran'l, who was a key character in the Hatfield-McCoy vendetta, died from complications from injuries suffered after toppling into a blazing cooking-fire at his Pikeville home. A sad ending, indeed. His casket was especially ornate for its period in eastern Kentucky.
