San Joaquin Valley, CA

Advisory: "Atmospheric River" Rainstorm Forecast for Kern County - Be Aware

Este es un mensaje de la seguridad. Para espanol, llame a 211. Gracias. If you live or work near an area that may be affected by the so-called atmospheric river rainstorm forecast for Kern County this week, please pay close attention to this message. The National Weather Service predicts that a weather disturbance this week will allow abundant moisture in the form of an atmospheric river to cause heavy rain in Southern and Central California, including Kern County. The heaviest rain is expected from Wednesday morning, March 21st, through Thursday afternoon, March 22nd. Because this storm is predicted to bring more rain than previous storms this year, flooding from excessive runoff, mud and debris flows, and rock slides may become hazards. Your Kern County emergency authorities urge residents to be alert, recognizing the potential for heavy runoff, mud and debris flows, and rock slides into populated areas, and remain aware of their surroundings. You are urged to closely monitor and anticipate changing conditions in your area and be prepared to move to a place of safety if it becomes necessary. Should signs of mud flows or heavy runoff be observed, residents should move out of the area or to higher ground. Avoid entering the path of the flow as water and mud flows are deceivingly powerful. If the situation changes, an updated message will be sent. You are encouraged to take action immediately if you feel threatened, even if you have not received another ReadyKern message. The National Weather Service suggests that residents monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if flooding becomes imminent or is reported. For additional information about local weather conditions, please contact the National Weather Service in Hanford. You may visit the National Weather Service's website at weather.gov/hanford or page at facebook.com/NWSHanford, or call them at (559) 584-3752. Please make sure your neighbors are informed. Please stay tuned to your local television and radio stations for more information as it becomes available. If you have any questions about the content of this message, please contact Kern County Information and Referral Services at 2-1-1. Thank you.
For full details, view this message on the web.

Los Padres BEAR Aware

🛢 Yes, ‘recycling’ is a bear attractant. Most cans have left over sugar which attract Bears, ants, raccoons, etc. Soda is just like nectar - calories for bears! If recycles are stored outside, Bears may dump them over and try to get some calories from whatever’s left behind. Note: All outside trash in PMC is required to be a bear resistant container.
🎨🎭🎹 Dropping your recycles at the bear resistant recycle bin near the PMC Community garden helps fund childrens programs for PMC’s Peak to Peak School.

SNOW VISITORS! Photo is Mt Pinos...
---- Read details and respect our area!
_ ❄ SNOW is on the ground at the TOP of Mt. Pinos. There is 5+ inches of snow on top Mt Pinos (elevation 8,847 feet). Call the Los Padres National Forest Mt. Pinos District ranger office to see if the snow gates are open. 661.245.3731. 🔺 At 9:10am on Saturday March 3rd, 2018 - the Snow gates are open!
_ ❄ PARKING - All 4 Tires Must Be to the Right of the White Line if you Park. Use pullouts and parking lots. Always park off of the traveled portion of the road where you are not blocking traffic or other roadways.
_ ❄ TRASH - Take your Trash home with you, don't pollute our forest! If you see trash on the ground, help keep our forest clean by picking it up and taking it with you to dispose of!
_ ❆ CARRY CHAINS - Make sure your Tire Chains fit properly and that you know how to install them. Make sure your wiper blades work. Fill up the Gas tank.
_ 🌲 ADVENTURE PASS - purchase a USFS Adventure pass $5.00 per day.
_ ☁ PRIVATE PROPERTY - Do not park your vehicle or play on Private Property. There is a lot of private land inside and near Los Padres National Forest including Lebec, Frazier Park, Lake of the Woods, Piñon Pines and Pine Mountain Club.
_ ☁ CLOTHING - Dress warmly - If you plan on SNOW PLAY - dress in layers (long sleeve, sweatshirt, jacket). Always bring extra SOCKS and an extra pair of shoes. You'll want warm feet when you finish! A scarf around your neck is a great idea if the wind picks up! Hats, gloves & coats!
_ ❆ WEATHER - Cold - Around 20-35 degrees at higher elevations and usually windy. Check the National Weather service forecast for Kern County Mountains before traveling.
_ ❄ CHILDREN & people - Drive SLOW, watch for people along the roadways and darting children. Keep all people OFF of roadways at all times. The speed limit is up to 55mph.
_ ☁ ELEVATION - Drink plenty of Water, the elevation can dehydrate you! If you get a headache, you're getting dehydrated - drive to a lower elevation.
_ ❆ ICE - Watch for ice on the road, particularly in late afternoon shadows. Beware of "black ice" - pavement that looks clear but is glazed over with ice. The temperature drops at about 3:00pm and the roads get more icy!
_ ☃ Be careful when hiking or walking in snow and icy areas. Watch your footing. Yak Trax are good devices for adult shoes to prevent slipping.
_ ☃ SLEDDING - When sledding, be sure you have a safe place to stop with plenty of distance between you and trees, parked cars and other people. Concussions can happen... examine the route before you slide down it. Never sled toward a road unless you have 40 yards of clearance. Be safe and sled away from roadways that are 55mph roads!
_ ❄ Carry blankets/sleeping bag, dry clothing, extra socks, extra food and water, a flashlight, first aid kit, matches, kitty litter or cinders (for traction) and a shovel in the trunk of your car.
_ ❄ Call before Visiting our mountain areas to obtain current road and snow conditions. Call Caltrans at (800) 427-7623 and check Pine Mountain Club News & events on Facebook.
_ ❆ WHERE ARE YOU GOING? - Leave your itinerary with a friend or family member. Don't travel alone. Take a good map.
_ ☃ Watch for Snow Plows and stay 150 YARDS behind them. Immediately move your vehicles for plows or any emergency vehicles.
_ ❆ If you become lost or injured, stay calm and dry, and shelter yourself from the elements if you can. Do not wander from your planned route. Don't rely on your cell phone to summon help because many areas of the forest have no coverage.
❄ ❄ Be Safe and have fun! ❄ ❄
