“Before the second weekend in August each year, lovers of country and mountain music leave their homes in time to be in Galax, VA for the Annual Old Fiddler’s Convention. For some this means hundreds of miles of travel, while for others it will be a short trip from their nearby homes. Most of these people don’t play music, and come just for the listening and renewing old acquaintances. However, a few hundred come with their instruments to show their skill, and compete for the cash prizes which total thousands of dollars. But most of them would come without the prizes being offered. They want to see and be seen, and hear and be heard. The instruments vary from mouth harps in pockets to bull fiddles strapped on top of cars. Bluegrass and Folk Music in Galax, VA
"The World Capital of Old Time Mountain Music"

The town of Galax, VA - less than 30 miles north of Fern Hollow - is known as the “World Capital of Old Time Mountain Music.” Galax has earned this distinction because of its annual Galax Old Fiddler’s Convention. This world renowned festival and competition has been held every August since 1935! The festival attracts participants and visitors from all over the world. It showcases Old Time, Bluegrass, and Folk Music as well as flatfoot and clogging dancers. Young and old compete for prizes, but the family atmosphere and the opportunity to play music with old friends keeps people coming back year after year.

Galax Leaf & String Festival
This festival is held the second weekend in June every year. Craft vendors, food concessions, instrument makers and music fill the streets for this 2-day festival. A special music event is held at the Blue Ridge Music Center on Saturday night.

Blue Ridge Backroads Live
This is a unique weekly radio show featuring Old Time and Bluegrass bands from throughout the region. It is broadcast live at the Rex Theatre by the local radio station and reaches 4 states and over 40 counties. The shows are attended by many local residents as well as visitors from around the globe. Celebrating the Appalachian Mountains food heritage in the High Country of North Carolina....https://neckofthewoodsnc.com/

Our county, Alleghany County is one of the 7 North Carolina counties that make up the ‘High Country’ region. The counties in the High Country region share a rich Appalachian Mountain food heritage that is celebrated by the Neck of the Woods Local Flavor Trail. I was thrilled to discover how much of the Flavor Trail is located near our Fern Hollow cabin, in Piney Creek, NC. I used my little Snip-It tool and snipped out the part of the trail map that is within 50 miles of our cabin.

The 50-mile radius includes the counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Wilkes and part of Watauga. But many of the attractions are closer than 50 miles. For instance, the closest winery on the trail is the Thistle Meadow Winery, only 13 miles away in Laurel Springs, NC! http://www.thistlemeadowwinery.com/

Did you know that the Land of Oz is in North Carolina? And only 70 miles from our Fern Hollow Cabin!

Nearly every day I learn about a new attraction in western North Carolina worth visiting! I credit a wonderful Facebook group I joined called Blue Ridge Mountain Life. A group member recently posted an intriguing post about the 'Land of Oz Theme Park' in Beech Mountain, NC. This historical park is based on L. Frank Baum's "Land of Oz' books, of which there are 14! Fern Hollow will open for the Spring/Summer season soon!

This was an unusual winter in Deerwood Park Neighborhood. The HOA emailed the owners, warning that some roads might be impassable. Our cabin was closed this past winter, but we will post the available date soon! Here are some photos of the neighborhood taken by one of the year round residents. Most of the roads are gravel and mountanous!

Did you know that the 'New River' is one of the oldest rivers in the world? Although there is always debate about it, the New River is believed to be the second oldest in the world and the oldest in North America! Guests at Fern Hollow can drive a short 12 minutes to find canoe, kayak, and tube rentals, as well as guided River tours. Or bring your own equipment and put in at any of the public access points on the New River. At the King's Creek Access, there is plenty of parking, a picnic area, easy River access, and restrooms - all just 5 miles from Fern Hollow!
