The barge is a 3-minute trip, running continuously morning through evening, and carrying motor vehicles and foot traffic. Boats, golf carts, kayaks and paddle boards are available through advance rental on the mainland or island. There is one restaurant, Rum Bay, on Palm Island, about a 5-min. car or golf cart ride from your unit. It offers delicious seafood and American cuisine for lunch and dinner in a casual, comfortable setting. There is also a small convenience store/gift shop and snack bar serving morning coffee and breakfast, snacks and ice cream treats. A water taxi travels from Rum Bay to Leverock's Seafood Restaurant on the mainland. Shopping, groceries, and dining in a variety of cuisines and prices are available on the mainland, as are various wildlife preserves and parks. Shelling on Don Pedro Island is among the finest of anywhere in the world. Fishing is excellent in the pristine sea and lagoon waters. An abundance of sea birds flock to the beaches (see photo album), which also are perfect hatching grounds for sea turtles. Dolphins swimming by, a gopher tortoise crossing the road, and bunnies scampering by the unit are common sights. With patience and luck, you may even spot a manatee or otter!
