What an Amazing Effort!

This past Saturday morning, our Waterway Warrior Cleanup was a huge success! Nearly 60 volunteers—on land, in the water, and on boats—joined forces to help protect our cherished waterways. We’re thrilled to share that together, we hauled out an estimated 3,000 pounds of debris!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to every volunteer for their enthusiasm and dedication, and a special shout-out to the incredible boat captains who helped us capture and haul away all the debris. We couldn’t have done this event without the paddlers who helped to reach every nook and cranny of the mangroves and waterways.

While we’re posting these photos a few days after the event, the impact of your hard work is already making a difference. You all truly embodied the Waterway Warrior spirit, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished together.

Let’s keep this momentum going as we continue to champion clean, healthy waterways! Please sign up with Keep Charlotte Beautiful Florida to learn about more upcoming clean ups & follow us for more conservation events.

This photo from 2015 captures the magic of paddling at Stump Pass Beach State Park—a serene moment shared between a paddle boarder and playful dolphins. 🐬 It reminds us of the beauty that once was and the resilience we work toward every day.

While the hurricanes have reshaped our coastline, they haven’t shaken our resolve. At Don Pedro Island State Park, we’re reminded how fortunate we are to still experience moments of natural wonder. And as the county and state continue debris removal, we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and help bring Stump Pass back to life.

Your support this holiday season has been the light that keeps us going. Thank you for standing with us as we rebuild and restore. Together, we’ll ensure these waters remain a sanctuary for generations to come. 💙

🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at SUP Englewood! 🍂

This year, Thanksgiving feels more meaningful than ever. In the wake of the hurricanes, we’ve seen firsthand the power of community, resilience, and generosity. From volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to help us clean up, to friends, and neighbors who supported our business in every way—they’ve all been a reminder of what we have to be truly thankful for. 💙

We’ve faced challenges, but together, we’re moving forward stronger than ever. Your kindness, encouragement, and belief in what we do have been our anchor through it all. 🌊

Today, we celebrate YOU—our incredible community—and the journey we’re on together. Whether it’s paddling in paradise, sharing stories, or building new memories, we couldn’t do it without you.

Wishing you and your loved ones a day filled with love, laughter, and gratitude. 🦃🥧 Let’s continue to move forward, together. 💪💛

Waterway Cleanup Success and Upcoming Event on December 14th! 🎉

Yesterday, our community came together in a big way. 🫶🏻 Sixteen dedicated volunteers joined forces to clean up our local waterways, and the results were astounding. We removed over 1,000 pounds of trash—including 9 garbage cans, a dishwasher, a VCR, power tools, and heaps of debris. Our volunteers proved to be true Waterway Warriors, venturing under mangroves and onto barely accessible parts of the mangrove islands to collect numerous piles of litter. Our boat was filled to the brim!

Reflecting on our previous cleanup, we now realize we may have underestimated the total amount of trash collected. If this one boatload was over 1,000 pounds, the previous event likely resulted in five times that amount! This just highlights the incredible impact we can have when we work together.

🗓️ Join Us for the Next Cleanup on December 14th!

We're gearing up for another cleanup event, and we need your help to make it even bigger and better. We're organizing a fleet of boats and kayaks to tackle the northern part of the park boundary next. The plan is to tackle along Palm Island and the mangrove stretch to just before the car ferry to Palm Island.

How You Can Help:

🚤 Boat Owners: We need boaters willing to help transport trash and marine debris. If you or someone you know can assist, please contact us!
🚣 Volunteers: No boat? No problem! We have kayaks available until we run out of gear. Come join us in making a difference.
🛟 Safety Support Boats: This area is a faster speed zone, so we need boat support to protect our paddlers. Your participation helps ensure everyone's safety.

Let's Make This an Epic Event! 🎉

Please help us spread the word by sharing this post with your friends and family. Together, we can make a significant impact on the health of our waterways.

Don't Forget to RSVP! ✌️❤️

To ensure we have enough equipment and resources, please RSVP as soon as possible. Let's all come together on December 14th to continue our mission of cleaning up our beautiful waterways.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you there! 🙌🏻❤️

🌊 A Rare and Sobering Find Near LGI 🌊

Today, a park visitor discovered something extraordinary while on the new beach landing: a sea turtle skull, washed ashore amidst a pile of shells. It’s a breathtaking sight, though bittersweet, as it reminds us of the fragility of marine life. 🐢💔

We took a moment to educate the visitor about the laws protecting sea turtles, and informed them that it is illegal to possess the skull. Sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, which means it is illegal to collect their shells, skulls, or other remains. This law helps safeguard these incredible creatures by preventing the unverified collection of their remains.

We are updating this post to provide accurate information based on what we’ve learned since sharing it.

Sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, which means it is illegal to collect, possess, or disturb their shells, skulls, or any remains without proper authorization. Initially, we mentioned that the best course of action was to leave such finds in place, but there are additional steps to take if you come across a protected species' remains:

Do Not Take It Home: Collecting or possessing sea turtle parts, even found washed ashore, is against the law.

Report the Find: Contact local wildlife authorities. In Florida, you can call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) to report your discovery. This ensures the remains are documented and handled appropriately for research or conservation purposes.

Take Photos for Documentation: If safe to do so, take a photo of the find and share it with the proper authorities. This can help them assess the situation and track valuable data about local sea turtle populations.

This update emphasizes that conservation and legal compliance go hand in hand. Sharing these moments helps spread awareness and deepen our connection to the natural world, but it’s essential to follow the correct protocols.

We appreciate your patience as we correct and clarify this important information. Thank you for helping us protect what makes Don Pedro Island State Park so special! 💙 Together, we can ensure these gentle giants continue to thrive.

Education leads to appreciation, and appreciation inspires conservation. Together, we can protect our waterways, plants, and animals, ensuring future generations can experience their beauty.

🌊 A Massive Thank You to Our Waterway Warriors! 🌊

We are absolutely blown away by the turnout and the impact of our latest Waterway Warrior Cleanup event at Don Pedro Island State Park! 💪💙 With the help of 42 incredible volunteers, we collected 300 bags of trash and removed approximately 1,050 pounds of garbage from a four-mile stretch of waterway and the northern side of Little Gasparilla Island. 🌎✨

The community’s support has been overwhelming, and we’re so grateful for every single one of you who showed up and worked tirelessly. While we’re still hauling the debris to dump sites, we want to take a moment to celebrate this massive effort. 🛶🚛

A special shoutout to:
🌟 Dawn, our amazing community outreach specialist, who not only took stunning photos but also led on-the-water groups and gathered debris.
🌟 Ray, who captained the boat and ensured the debris made it safely back to shore.
🌟 Alex & Barb, who worked inside the boat, picking up debris and assisting with gear.
🌟 Rick, for managing the massive check-in process for all of our volunteers with ease.
🌟 Nicole, who organized and planned the event, making everything run smoothly.
🌟 Rich, for working tirelessly to get the buggy running and collecting debris from the beachside.
🌟 Rhonda Harvey of Keep Charlotte Beautiful, for supplying all the necessary cleanup materials.
🌟 Suncoast SUP Society and The Kayaking Gals of Englewood, who brought out their incredible paddling crews. These groups worked tirelessly to remove debris from the water—your teamwork and dedication were phenomenal!
🌟 All of our paddlers, who braved the distances and made countless trips to gather debris.
🌟 All of our land volunteers, who cleared the boatloads of trash and transported everything to the parking lot.

The work isn’t done yet! We’re already planning a couple more Waterway Warrior Cleanup events to tackle the south end of the island and the area just north of the state park. Stay tuned for dates and details—we’d love to have you join us again.

Oysters are nature’s water purifiers! These amazing shellfish filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, helping keep our local waterways clear and healthy. They also provide critical habitat for marine life and help protect our shorelines from erosion. 🦪💧

While oysters do so much good, it’s important to remember that they can carry naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria. Vibrio thrives in warm, brackish waters and can pose a risk if you have open wounds or a weakened immune system. That’s why we always recommend avoiding water activities with any open cuts.

💡 Here’s what you need to know:

🦪Vibrio cases in Charlotte County remain low—only 4 cases after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. By comparison, other areas have seen much higher numbers.
💧Our local water quality reports are extremely good. Even after recent storms, thanks in part to natural filtration.

🌟 Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of our waters! Whether you’re paddling, fishing, or simply soaking in the views, remember that nature thrives here. Learn more about local water health and safety here: https://supenglewood.com/water-quality-your-safety/

View links regarding water quality testing and learn more about vibrio, including current statistics and reports.

Together, we can celebrate and protect our incredible coastal ecosystem! 💙
