Important message: if your babies had identifying leg bands, now is a good time to clip them off with finger nail clippers. If you aren’t sure just go ahead and double check!

Hatching is winding down and color availability depends on how many of each color will hatch!

Preparation for your new birds (No it doesn’t have to be fancy!) The big THREE Food, Water, Temperature!

Food: You’ll need Game Bird Starter Feed (crumbles for babies) You can get this at almost any farm supply store but we get ours at Tractor Supply. (Double check with your tractor supply because I have heard some areas not every tractor supply had it available but they could order it. Its by Dumor and 24% protein. It’s about $17 for a 50 lb bag. It’s a little cheaper if you go to MFA.

Water: just use a 1 gallon Chick waterer that you can also get at farm store. I do not recommend using just a water bowl because they can fall in or get their feathers wet. Birds that get wet also get cold. And that’s a problem when they are supposed to maintain a warm temperature.

Heat: Have a pen big enough you can have heat on one side and a “cooler” side for them to get away from the heat lamp if they prefer. Birds standing directly under the lamp and huddled up are telling you they are too cold and you need to lower the lamp. Birds that avoid the lamp are probably too warm and you need to raise the lamp. Since they can fly at 1 week old, I use a water tank with a screen top and set my heat lamp directly on the lid. It’s about 2ft off the ground and the birds should be going back and forth eating and drinking or possibly sleeping (They sleep a lot. And sleep hard! They aren’t dead! 😆) I find that an unfinished basement with cool steady airflow is an ideal place for your brooder. Lots of people use their garage as well and that’s fine as long as temps don’t rise above 80-85 degrees in the garage. The birds need a heat lamp their first 6-8 weeks of life and the heat lamp will be about 99 degrees alone. If the garage gets above 80 then your brooder (with a heat lamp) will be much hotter! Just something to consider when you choose your brooder location. I never advise trying to brood outside. The temperatures and humidity change to rapidly from day to night time. That’s why a basement gives you a great place to have one constant temperature the whole time. Not up and down.

Flooring: we used to use pine shavings but we got tired of the dust. It’s way simpler to use a cage with a wire bottom or even simpler, if you use paper towels and change them out every couple days it’s pretty easy! Paper towels are great because they allow easy grip on the birds feet and they can’t “slip”. Avoid using really slick material like news paper. Sometimes I’ll still use newspaper but I wrinkle it up really good and they can walk on it just fine without slipping.

A couple BIG UPDATES...

1) They’re starting to HATCH!
2) We have built this brand new facility just in time for hatching which we plan on housing peachicks and using as our Hatchery. If you are doing local pick ups this will most likely be the building you will pick up at.

If you are located in Columbia/New Florence, MO or the Kansas City Missouri area I should have contacted each of you already to let you know we will be delivering your birds June 29th. If you believe you ordered, but did not receive a notification, please send me a message or call me at 816-588-1292.

Good people of Kansas... I will be contacting you shortly. If I can squeeze in the trip I will deliver birds during the week or the weekend of June 6th.

Omaha, Des Moines, and Southern Missouri I will be in touch with each of you as the birds hatch. We want to bring as many birds with us as possible to allow people to choose the ones they want! Colors are usually not a problem to let you pick out aside from limited amounts of Cameo and Opal.

If you have any questions at all, send us a message or give me a call! Thank you! Hope all is well with everyone!!!
