Moments like these, when I build something new for the yaks and they enjoy it, are very satisfying. Often times, I'll build or bring them something and they want nothing to do with it. For instance, the time I brought them bouncy balls from Walmart to play with. They were horrified by them!

This water bucket table has a couple purposes relating to living off-grid in a dry cabin and having a mischievous teenage bull πŸ˜‰. In the winter I switch from pouring water into a big tub in the yak pen to rotating water buckets twice a day so they have fresh water to drink before it freezes. If it freezes before they drink it, I provide them with fresh water and bring the buckets inside to thaw. Haggis's favorite activity was being the first one to drink water and then enthusiastically flipping the bucket - or rather *flinging* - the bucket across the pen when he was done, wasting lots of water for the other yaks. Now the buckets sit conveniently in a heavy duty table that Haggis hasn't flipped yet!!

Thanks Mike Henderson for letting me borrow your jig saw!

Welcome to the family Sweetie and Thistle!!

The Mammut Mountain herd has grown. These two adorable yaks joined us from Kenny Lake. Thistle is the golden yak. She is a yearling and Kelpie's younger sister. Sweetie is the black yak, 5-years old and unrelated to the others. Sweetie was trained from a calf and lives up to her name - a total sweetheart!

Haggis looking dapper in his new saddle 😍🎩

Today we worked on halter training and brushing Kelpie while saddle training Haggis. I brought this beautiful Peruvian saddle back to Alaska from a recent trip to the southeast to visit family.

I have been working up to riding Haggis by having him wear a ba****ck saddle pad and then sitting on him with the saddle pad. The saddle pad doesn't offer much security to a rider so my next step was to work Haggis up to a real saddle. Today we hit that milestone. He wore the saddle calmly and seemed unperturbed. I was so tempted to climb on, but I know I need to be patient and respectful to set Haggis up for success!!

Mosquitos constantly vex the yaks throughout the summer!! Their natural way to combat bugs biting around their eyes is to roll and rub their faces in dirt. Ideally, I like to see them with a thin layer of dried mud around their eyes. If I see the mosquitos getting bad on them, I'll attempt to put Bag Balm around their eyes or natural bug repellent between their horns, but they often seem more annoyed about that than the bugs. A few days ago I saw a sparrow hanging out around the yaks and landing on their heads! I figured it was time to get some swallow boxes going to see if that will improve the mosquito population and make us all happy!!
