Curious about leopard sharks?

This week on our radio show, the West Marin Naturalist Hour on KWMR - West Marin Community Radio, we chatted with marine researcher Jonathon K***z about his work studying these beautiful animals in our local waters.

Hosted by Elizabeth Wilhelm (Liz), Dallas Smith, and Seamus Tomkins.

Ever wonder what you're looking at in the sky? Here’s a breakdown of the different types of clouds you typically see and the heights they form at!

High clouds (above 20,000 ft):
Cirrus: Wispy, feathery — made of ice crystals.
Cirrostratus: Thin, veil-like — often create halos around the sun.
Cirrocumulus: Small, white patches — like cotton balls high up.

Middle clouds (6,500–20,000 ft):
Altostratus: Gray/blue layers — sun may be dimly visible.
Altocumulus: Fluffy, white to gray patches — often seen on warm, humid mornings.

Low clouds (up to 6,500 ft):
Stratus: Gray, fog-like layers — can bring light mist or drizzle.
Stratocumulus: Lumpy layers — usually don’t bring rain.
Cumulus: Classic puffy clouds — fair weather favorites!

And the big one — Cumulonimbus:
Towering, dramatic, and stretching through all layers — these thunderstorm giants can mean serious weather!

Low tide magic: we found another East Pacific Red Octopus while exploring the intertidal zone of Tomales Bay!

These little cephalopods are masters of disguise, changing color and texture to blend into the seafloor. Usually reclusive, this one gave us a rare glimpse of its incredible form.

A reminder that even a short walk at low tide can reveal something amazing. 🐙💚

Small but mighty, Olympia oysters once formed reefs along the shores of Tomales Bay.

These native bivalves filtered water, created shelter for juvenile fish and crabs, and buffered the shoreline from erosion. For generations, they were a staple in the diets of the Tamal-Ko people, the original stewards of this bay. While the Gold Rush era brought a surge in oyster demand, it was the combination of habitat disruption, overharvesting, and shifting ecological conditions that led to their near disappearance by the early 20th century.

Now, after decades of silence, their shells are clinging to the rocks again.

If you walk the shoreline at low tide and look closely, you just might spot this native making its quiet return.

(We’re reposting this with another video that’s a little easier to share!) 🏆 We won the Best Float in the Adult Performance category at Western Weekend! It was all thanks to the most incredible crew of friends, performers, musicians, and magical sea creatures. (And so many bubbles!)

Point Reyes Adventure Co. + Space Suit Music = a last-minute parade miracle that came together just days before showtime. And wow, did it come together!

🎶 Huge shoutout to Seamus and Flynn…you two crushed it! You sounded SO GOOD and were absolutely in your element playing for that huge crowd. Follow them on social media, and check out their music on their website: www.spacesuitmusic.com

🦈 Big love to our stilt-walking Bat Ray and her paddle-twirling “leopard” shark partner; Hannah and Luis, you’re incredible.

💃💖 And to our parade crew: Catie, Phoebe, Lily, Caesar, Lorena, Colleen, Brett, Sabrina, Tyler, Kansas, Jacob, and everyone who danced, waved, and brought that Point Reyes sparkle. THANK YOU!

And yes… next year we’re bringing 1,000 ice pops. We learned our lesson. 😂

We love you, West Marin. Let’s do it again next year! 🌊🎉🌈

Friday was our first Caves, Keyholes, and Culinary Exploration and we’re still smiling from it!

We kicked off the morning with the rising sun and steaming bowls of hot cereal topped with fruit compote, yogurt, and granola, plus hot drinks to warm us up. Then we hit the beach to explore a section of coastline that’s only accessible during the lowest tides of the year.

There were tidepools full of life, ochre stars so huge we nicknamed them “ogre stars", an octopus, blooming wildflowers, and fantastic weather.

After the hike, chef and farmer John Kopshever made us a beautiful, multiple-course, French-inspired meal using ingredients from his ranch while we all soaked in the beauty of Tomales Point.

Merguez sliders, cod cakes, local greens with egg and asparagus, magret de cannard (duck breast), creamy potatoes with pumpkin, confit de o’ignon, apple sauce, Brickmaiden bread, and topped off with an olive oil orange cake! It was one of the best meals we’ve ever had outside...so good, we forgot to take a photo before every bite was gone!

Want in next time? Stay tuned for fall dates.

Spotted this tiny orange marvel during the last super low tide in Tomales Bay! It’s the Red-trumpet Calcareous Tubeworm (Serpula columbiana) and that little orange circle? That’s its operculum, the fancy front door to its tube-home.

When the tide is in, it opens up like a feathery firework to catch plankton drifting by. I added a second photo (not mine) to show what it looks like when it’s out and about—it’s pretty fabulous.
Thumb included for scale. Tidepool magic is real!

Before satellites and search helicopters, there were surfboats, Lyle guns, and breeches buoys.

When ships wrecked in the fog or storms, it was human hands - rowing through breakers, firing lines, and hauling survivors to shore - that made the difference.

This Memorial Day, we honor their bravery and the service of all who’ve stood between danger and safety.
