🚨 We have a few seats left in this Friday's Introductory sessions in the AMOCA Studio!

Our 1-hour introductory sessions, offered monthly, are the perfect way to get your hands dirty, relax, and have fun! Learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. And, if you successfully create a bowl, staff will glaze and fire it after the class is completed—all included in the price of the class.

Introductory sessions are for adults ages 18 and over (students 16+ may attend when accompanied by a paying adult). Along with your class comes a pass for complimentary admission to the Museum’s galleries – don’t miss the chance to explore one of the largest collections of ceramic art in the United States!

We have TWO exciting upcoming opportunities for you to tune in virtually and get insights directly from clay artists! 👏🤩

This Tuesday, October 29 at noon (PDT), Artist in Residence Reniel Del Rosario joins us for a virtual presentation to celebrate his residency in the AMOCA Studio. Del Rosario will share about his practice, past work, and future directions.

Coming up on Friday, November 22 (PST), tune in for a virtual artist talk with Christina A. West, the talented artist behind "Strut." Currently on view in the Igal & Diane Silber Vault Gallery, "Strut" complicates tropes of masculinity common to representations of the male body.

Both presentations will be followed by a moderated Q&A session, where you’ll have the opportunity to pose your own questions to the artists.

Our 1-hour introductory sessions, offered monthly, are the perfect way to get your hands dirty, relax, and have fun! Learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. And, if you successfully create a bowl, staff will glaze and fire it after the class is completed—all included in the price of the class.

Or do you want to dig a little deeper into clay? Our fall 6-week classes--in handbuilding, wheel throwing, and more!--begin this week. Class size is limited to 12 students, and during fall session you'll expand your ceramic skills with guidance from our talented instructors. Fall session classes are filling up, but we have a few seats available!

Join us in welcoming Stephanie Kim, newly arrived Artist in Residence in the AMOCA Studio 👏

Stephanie Kim () is a ceramic artist based in California who also works remotely as a software engineer. She has completed short residencies at Clay Studio of Missoula, Baltimore Clayworks, AIR Vallauris, and Red Lodge Clay Center. Stephanie has also exhibited work in many juried exhibitions across the United States. As an artist, Stephanie is constantly pushing herself to explore new techniques and styles, always striving to improve and evolve her craft. She creates large sculptural forms, each one adorned with intricate and expressive drawings that bring her creations to life. Kim will be in residence at AMOCA from October 2024–March 2025.

Join us in extending a warm welcome to AMOCA's newly arrived Artist in Residence, Reniel Del Rosario! 🤩 Reniel will be in residence at AMOCA September 2024–August 2025.

Reniel Del Rosario (b. Iba, Philippines) uses ceramics, quantity, and satire to discuss themes of commodification and value. His projects range from interactive mimicries of consumer establishments, to reimaginings of artifacts, to imperfect copies of already-existing objects. He holds a BA in Art Practice from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a 2019 recipient of the Center for Craft’s Windgate-Lamar fellowship, a 2022 SFMOMA Artists Soapbox Derby racer, and has been featured in writings such as ARTFORUM and Bon Appetit. His work has been exhibited internationally through traditional and alternative venues such as West Coast Craft, Meta Open Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Catharine Clark Gallery, the 79th Scripps Ceramics Annual, Load Na Dito, San Francisco Art Fair, Praise Shadows Art Gallery, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Jane Lombard Gallery, and simply on the public sidewalk.

Ready to learn something new or hone your skills? It's time to sign up for fall clay classes 😎 🍂

The studio offers both beginner and intermediate wheel throwing classes, as well as beginning and continuing hand building classes. AMOCA's classes are for adults ages 18 and over (students 16+ may attend when accompanied by a paying adult). 6-week classes encourage development of ceramic skills and are limited to 12 participants; access to open studio hours is included for the duration of the class and one week following.

Michelle Solorzano is a figurative ceramic sculptor whose work explores themes of immigration, identity, and culture, all woven into a narrative shaped by her personal experiences. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Ceramics from the State University of New York at Potsdam and recently completed her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Indiana University. Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Michelle relocated to New York with her family when she was fifteen. Her artwork serves as a testament to the diverse tapestry of Dominican heritage, blending Taino, African, and Spanish influences. Solorzano will be in residence at AMOCA from August 2024–July 2025.

🚨 Only a few spots left, and a few weeks left to sign up! Join artist Adrienne Eliades ( ) in the AMOCA studio for a 2-day, HANDS-ON workshop on the topic of surface design.

This HANDS-ON workshop provides an overview of surface decoration techniques from basic underglaze painting to creating intricate designs with combined application methods.

Techniques will include inlay, slip trailing, stenciling, and resist in combination with underglaze and glaze on wet clay and bisqueware. Demonstrations, exercises, and discussions will prompt students to apply personal inspiration and imagery towards the development of a unique style in ceramics decoration.

The objective will be to broaden your surface decoration repertoire by exploring various design solutions with each piece you make. Students will leave with new skills and ideas, greenware pots, and glazed tests fired to mid-range temperature.

Make a plan to tune in to art! On Tuesday, August 27 at noon, you're invited to join us for a virtual artist talk with Artist in Residence Luke Shalan to celebrate his residency in the AMOCA Studio. Shalan will share about his practice, current work, and future directions. There will be an opportunity for Q & A following the presentation.

Luke Shalan received his BFA with a focus in Ceramics from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA. In addition, he studied at The Australian National University (School of Art) in Canberra, ACT and attended Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC. Luke’s work can be seen at Lawson-Fenning’s showroom in Hollywood, CA and has been included in exhibitions, such as “CUBE//TOOL” at Bradley Duncan Studio; Sunset Magazine’s “IDEA HOUSE” in Santa Monica; and “Stienbesser Experimental Gastronomy Retrospective” at the CODA Museum, Netherlands. His work has been featured in publications including Sunset Magazine, Architectural Digest, POPEYE magazine, C-File, and The Method Case. Alongside his own practice, Luke has designed, consulted and produced ceramic work for many artists and designers namely Kelly Wearstler, Jenni Kayne, Chris Kallmyer and Bradley Duncan Studio. Shalan is in residence at AMOCA March–September 2024.

🚨 Attention clay enthusiasts! AMOCA’s Studio Scholarship Application is now open for upcoming Fall 2024 classes and workshops 🎨

The AMOCA Ceramics Studio strives to create an environment that is accessible and welcoming to learners and artists of all levels and experiences. AMOCA is aware that costs can be a barrier to accessibility. We want to ensure that new and returning artists have a chance to get their hands dirty with clay, no matter their financial circumstances.

When funds are available, AMOCA offers Studio Scholarships for Adult students (Ages 18+) on a first-come, first-served basis. Approved applications are valid for the upcoming quarter. Scholarship winners will be notified via email and/or phone call.

Join us in extending a warm welcome to AMOCA's newly arrived Artist in Residence, Michelle Solorzano! Michelle will be in residence at the AMOCA Ceramics Studio August 2024–July 2025.

Michelle Solorzano earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Ceramics from the State University of New York at Potsdam and is currently working towards her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Indiana University's Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design. Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Michelle moved to New York with her family at the age of fifteen. Michelle comes to Pomona from Bloomington, Indiana, where she has been focusing on her studies and sharing her passion for ceramics through teaching.

AMOCA's monthly introductory sessions are the perfect way to get your hands dirty, relax, and have fun! You'll learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. If you successfully create a bowl, staff will glaze and fire it after the class is completed—all included in the price of the class. If you’d like to take the piece home with you, you can come back and pick it up.

Join Nathan Stanfield, AMOCA’s Studio Manager, in the AMOCA studios for a multi-day Soda Firing workshop. This workshop will take place on September 28, 29, and October 5, from ~9a - 5p each day.

Day 1 will consist of glazing/slipping, wadding, and getting the kiln turned on.

Day 2 will be firing the kiln, talking about how it works, demonstrations, and spraying soda.

Day 3 will take place the following Saturday and consist of unloading the kiln together, talking about the pots, and cleaning up.

Paige O’Toole is a ceramic artist from Garrison, New York. Focusing on the intersection of gender, space and the domestic, her work explores themes of memory through gesture, and illusion through perception. O’Toole’s mark in clay is both immediate and archival, lasting and tangible evidence of her insatiable touch. She received her MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and holds a BA in Art History and a BFA in Ceramics from State University of New York at New Paltz. O’Toole has been in residence at AMOCA August 2023–July 2024.
