At first glance, this looks like it might be a unique shell, but upon closer inspection, you can see that there are a bunch of little shells and shell fragments. An even closer inspection reveals that these tiny shells are attached to a tube that is made by the plumed worm.

The plumed worm, which can be up to a foot long, lives buried in the sand and builds a J -shaped tube around itself. To protect its soft body as it darts out into the water column to grab food, the worm creates a chimney like extension to its underground tube. The chimney tube, seen in this image, sticks about two or three inches above the surface of the sand.

What treasures are attached to the outside of a tube worm’s tube depends on what debris is available around the worm. Some tubes, like this one, are covered with shells. Others are covered with pebbles, grains of sand, seaweed or even pieces of wood. Regardless of what the tube worm tube is covered in, it is interesting to note that the objects have a consistent size and shape. (Photo: NPS)

When walking in the coastal prairie, the purple petals and bright yellow stamen on these flowers are what initially caught our eye. But when we crouched down to take the picture, we were excited to see the red rosette leaves at the base of the flower’s stem. We quickly realized that weren’t looking at a “regular” coastal prairie plant, we were looking at a carnivorous sundew!

Carnivorous plants are typically found in environments with poor soil quality; they digest insects to obtain the nutrients that they need, but don’t get from the soil. Like the Venus flytrap, sundews are part of the genus, drosera. Literally translated from Greek, drosera means “dewy” and is a direct reference to the “dew drops” on the tips of the fringed leaves. (The dew drops can be seen in the inset photo.)

The sundew secretes drops of a sticky substance that hang off the ends of the tiny hairs, or stalks, that grow on the leaves of the plant. When an insect crawls onto on a stalk to gobble the sweet drop, it gets stuck. The stalk bends toward the center of the leaf, bringing the insect into contact with many more sticky stalks, preventing its escape. Eventually, the insect dies from suffocation or exhaustion and the plant releases enzymes to digest it. The nutrients that are released during the digestion process are absorbed through the leaf instead of being released onto the ground. (Photo: NPS Inset Photo: Alexey Sergeev)

Please be courteous when waiting in line for the ferry ⛴🐬

When waiting on the ferry line to get to Port A, remember that folks who work in Port A can pass on far right lane to park in the park and ride at the ferry landing.
They are not cutting in line. They are trying to get to work on time. These are folks who serve your food, take your reservations, clean your room.
Please be kind.
Police are out right now making sure no one blocks that side.
