Lake Erie Islands
Put-in-Bay, Ohio, January 2, 2025
This morning about 40 residents, five gallon buckets in hand, gathered at the public docks to meet a Port Clinton company fish truck loaded with walleye bait. Usually, islanders net & stock up on minnows found around the islands, but this year the bait was scarce. A bulk buy plan was put into motion. With freezing temps in store, islanders anticipate a strong 2025 ice fishing season.

A Brief History: Miller Boat Line was started by William M. Miller in 1905 as a ice harvesting, fishing charter & water taxi service on the harbor of Put-in-Bay. During the 1940’s William’s son Lee Miller bought the dock Catawba point (where we presently leave from) & four all- steel passenger/vehicles ferries were added to the fleet during the 1940’s through the 1960’s. In the early 1970’s Miller’s developed the Lime Kiln Dock on the south tip of Put-in-Bay & this shortened the ferry trip between mainland & Put-in-Bay to under a half hour & Miller Ferries began the “short route” service, which not only shaved off transit time, but allowed Millers to add scheduled trips. In 1978 William (Bill) E. Market & his wife Mary Ann Market bought the Miller Boat Line from Mary C. Miller & over the years four all-steel, drive on/ drive off passenger & vehicle ferries eventually replaced the older side-load vessels. The new vessels were more efficient to load & unload, engine horsepower was increased & cruisetime was pared down to under 20 minutes. The Market family chose to retain the company name “Miller Boat Line” in honor of the Miller family that established the ferry company. Miller Marina on Put-in-Bay harbor, three retail shops & E’s Golf Cart Rental have been added over the last two decades. A new vessel is currently being designed & soon to be built with a projected launch date of Fall 2019.
