Pet food donations: St Joe Bay Humane Society🐕🐕

We recently posted about Two Fish Market, where you can donate your leftover foodstuffs to help local folks who need extra assistance with their groceries.

That got us thinking: wouldn’t it be great if there was also a way to donate your dog’s leftover pet food, instead of throwing it away or trying to pack it in your vehicle along with everything else?

Well we have fantastic news - there is!!! We contacted the Saint Joseph Bay Humane Society and they let us know that they accept pet food donations, both opened and unopened.

They are conveniently located at 1007 10th St in Port St Joe. Most of our guests will be driving very close by as they head back home.

They are open Tuesday-Saturday, but don’t worry if they are closed as you can simply leave your dog food on their front porch by the door.

All donated food goes to their Pet Food Bank, which local pet owners can access when they are struggling to buy food for their pets.

Especially for our senior citizens who rely heavily on their pets for companionship, it can be a difficult and stressful decision to have to choose between feeding their pets and feeding themselves. We think this Pet Food Bank is a fantastic way to help local folks in need provide food for their pets.

If you are able to support the Pet Food Bank by dropping off your leftover dog food, please message us with your pictures so that we can share in a future post!

We actually made this video back in 2023 when Alfred the Alligator was our latest game addition. However, we recently realized that we never posted this video, and since then we have added more indoor games and puzzles. At last count we now have over 100 to choose from!

Please consider donating your leftover food items to Two Fish Market. Each month they serve about 286 households in Gulf County, representing over 600 individuals who need extra help with their groceries.

Two Fish Market gratefully accepts fresh fruits and veggies, along with any unopened and unused foods. They also take unopened refrigerated and frozen foods as long as you bring them right from the fridge/freezer.

Two Fish Market is conveniently located at 212 Williams Ave in Port St Joe (2 streets off Hwy 98). Most of our guests will basically drive right past it on their way home. They are open Saturdays 9-1 eastern time, as well as Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10-4.

You can also drop off your unopened cans and boxes in the large white cooler at the South Gulf Volunteer Fire Department at the entrance to Cape San Blas Rd. Please don’t leave any fresh, refrigerated, or frozen items here though.

MORE BACKGROUND
This is a long post, but we felt that many of you would appreciate knowing the uniqueness of Two Fish Market as compared to a traditional food pantry.

Two Fish Market opened in April 2021 to serve those in the Gulf County who need extra help with their monthly groceries. Most of those who use this service are elderly and/or disabled. This wonderful ministry is run by the First United Methodist Church, and they act as the hands and feet of Jesus in serving those in need.

The concept is similar to a food pantry, where there is no charge to those using this service. However, Two Fish Market is wonderfully and amazingly different in many ways:

-those using the service are registered as “members”, so it’s feels more like a exclusive club than a just a food pantry give away

-members take a buggy (shopping cart) when they enter, and shop the shelves and aisles by themselves like in a regular store. There’s even a “checkout counter” where their selections are bagged or boxed.

- this approach empower members with a sense of dignity and control that they just wouldn’t have with a traditional food pantry

-being in small town Port St Joe means the members are greeted on a first name basis, and always get a smile and a kind word when they stop in

-letting members select their own food means much less food waste as compared to giving them a generic “box full of food” that they may or may not eat

-the Market has a huge impact in the local community, providing over 320,000 pounds of food over the last 3 years. This statistic doesn’t even begin to capture the significant and meaningful benefits realized at the individual member level.

-the Market is supported by Second Harvest of the Big Bend, local businesses, the Salt Air Farmers Market, civic minded groups, and individual contributors

-In 2024 we want to add the Pineapple Plantation family to these existing support groups. Thanks to the Weiler family for their donations to Two Fish Market - see the attached picture for their contribution. Please send us pictures of your donations as well, so that we can share them in a future post.

Pool and beach gear have been refreshed. We’ve gone through our gear and replaced things that had outlived their usefulness. The pool noodles were definitely in sad shape. We’ve also added some more shovels and other small beach toys, but forgot to take pictures of those.

Some of these new items were already available for our Spring Break guests, others were added in April. The Weiler family really enjoyed the new pool chairs.

Additional pictures show our existing beach carts and other backyard/beach games and gear.

The pool chairs, the pool dive rings, extra boogie boards, and the larger skim boards were NOT included in our original refresh budget.

Sea turtle nesting season has begun! Nesting season runs from May 1-Oct 31, and typically there are several nests within a very short walk from our beach access.

Please remember to leave no trace so that our momma turtles can safely make their nests and then return to the Gulf. Please watch this YouTube video for more information.

In 2022 a momma turtle decided the best place for her nest was right next to our beach access! Watch the video that we’ve added in the comments. The babies successfully hatched just a week before we arrived in August so we just missed them.

However, just a few steps north (towards the State Park) there was another nest that hatched while we were still there, and we saw this little fella make it safely to the Gulf. It was quite an experience, as this was the first time in over 20 years of coming to the Cape/Mexico Beach that we actually saw a hatchling!! ❤️

The turtle patrol is out early each morning looking for new nests, checking almost 6 miles of beach on the St Joe Peninsula. If you see them, please make sure to say hello and thank them for their efforts. Also, if you see hatchlings coming out of a nest, please contact them so that they can help give the babies safe passage to the water.

This is why we CAN have nice things!!

It’s because of our amazing guests, who take such wonderful care of Pineapple Plantation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Here are a just few examples:

-it’s been over a year, and we still have ALL the original chip clips! We figured that we would lose a few here and there due to breakage, etc; however, we have yet to lose even one.

-we still have the original foosballs from over 2 years ago when we bought the foosball table. We are amazed that they haven’t gotten lost or misplaced during that time.

-when we first bought Pineapple Plantation in 2021, we took a chance by providing our guests with a Sam’s Club sized container of All Free and Clear laundry detergent. That’s what we personally use due to allergic reactions, and we figured our guests might appreciate it as well. Not once has anyone ever walked off with the container - thank you!

These are just a few examples of the many small things that you all do to take care of Pineapple Plantation. Thank you so much!!

Our guests also take wonderful care of the large things, such as furniture, TVs, appliances, etc. As a result, we spend much less on wear and tear than expected. We then use the savings to provide even more things for you to enjoy. For example, last year we used these savings to purchase the air fryer and beach towels, among other things.

Thanks again for being such wonderful guests; you all are the best on the Cape!

One of our major 2023 upgrades is behind a locked door, and is something that we hope you never even think about. We’ve installed an internal water pressure booster, and it’s one of our most expensive improvements that we have ever made.

North Cape is known for many wonderful things, but being on a dead end road it’s also known for low water pressure. This can be a real downer when you’re trying to take a shower but it ends up being closer to a light rain.

As you can see from the pictures, even during the winter the Cape’s water pressure is only 30-40 psi, below the more normal 60 psi that many of us have in our homes. It can drop even lower during the other seasons, making even a simple lather and rinse an exercise in frustration. We have experienced this first hand when we used to rent on the Cape.

However, now that we have installed this booster pump, the water pressure should stay closer to a nice and strong 65 psi all year round.

We hope that this booster pump, along with our 80 gallon hot water heater (double the normal size), will make your “return from the beach” time that much more enjoyable.

We were busy last month getting ready for our 2024 guests! While not a comprehensive list (as we didn’t have time to take all the pictures), here are just some of the new things we will have for you this year:

-We now provide beach towels, so you have one less thing to pack!! This was a great suggestion from the Webster family last year; we just had to find a place to store them first.
-Speaking of storage, we’ve added new shelving in the laundry room for those towels. More storage also means more outdoor games!
-We also now provide beach bags (on the new shelving) to carry your sunscreen, etc
-We’ve added a 2nd beach cooler to go along with our 2 beach carts
-More beach toys, including an airplane, helicopter, boat, bulldozer, and sports car. The red things on the left are forms to make giant rectangular sand walls/buildings. These are in addition to our existing beach vehicles and other beach toys like buckets, shovels, etc. Just make sure you share with the kids!
-Inspired by the Weiler family, we now have a football, kickball, and a whiffle ball set. We even have heavy rubber bases - no more putting sand on paper plates!
-Some minor landscaping so that you shouldn’t have to duck while walking from the house to the road

**Cancellation Alert** August 17-24 is now available with a 7 night minimum. We typically block this premium week for us as scallop season begins on August 16th, but this year we are unable to go. FAQs Why are you doing this, and is there a catch? September 20th is our anniversary!!! One year ago today we became the proud owners of Pineapple Plantation, and we are only the second owners of this wonderful beach home. However, we feel more like caretakers who are building upon the wonderful job the previous owners (the Reids) have done. Bookings for this year have exceeded our wildest expectations, as we only had one empty week from the end of January through October 27th. We are so very appreciative of that. Since it seems like every anniversary comes with a sale, we are offering 25% off the already low November and December base rental rates. This excludes Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks, which are already booked anyway. Prior bookings are also excluded. Instead of the standard $199/night, these November and December stays are only $149/night, with only a 3 night minimum. In addition, our only other remaining openings this year are October 27th-November 5th. These days are also discounted 25%, from $265/night to $199/night, with only a 3 night minimum. These are for the base rental rates only; taxes and any other fees still apply.
