For what it lacks in its rather unimaginative name, Rocky Butte has to be one of our favorite rides in the city. About 30-45 minutes riding from the shop, the climb up is gradual, and scenic, with the very top affording 360° views of the Gorge and Portland. It’s a popular place to watch the sunset; the airport is close so plane-spotting can be fun too! The downhill on the south side utilizes a corkscrew tunnel, which makes for a super exhilarating ride!
Rocky Butte is one of several extinct cinder cone volcanoes within city limits, a distinction that only a few cities in the country have. Even more interesting is that when the Missoula Ice Age Floods ripped through the Columbia Gorge ages ago, Rocky Butte sat right in the path of the flow, which created an eddy behind it. This insanely strong current and eddy combination allowed for heaps of stones and debris to deposit in a long line, trailing away from the butte like a tail.
This tail of material now makes up what we know as Alameda Ridge, a fantastic little ripple in our landscape. The best part is there are several neighborhood greenways in the area and it’s a wonderful place to ride bikes!!

A good bike path is simple and adventuresome.
That's why our favorite bike path in Portland is...
Eastbank Esplanade!
The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade is 1.5 miles long, extending north from the Hawthorne Bridge, past the Morrison and Burnside Bridges, to the Steel Bridge with connections to eastside neighborhoods as well as across the river to Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Despite the minimalist nature of this quadrant cutting bikeway, there seem to be endless opportunities to take in the beautiful cityscape while looking over the Willamette River.

I thought I’d use one of our slick full carbon road bike rentals for this year’s De Ronde ride, a masochistic sweat-fest with over 9000’ of gain in a relatively short area. The course has been adapted over the years and I gotta hand it to @chasing.lions.pdx , the routing is brilliantly thought out with steep, winding ascents, fast smoother descents, and very few roads ridden twice. I was really excited to do this with our stellar crew since the course is essentially an amalgamation of Portland’s best climbs close to town, however there were tons of new little spots I haven’t checked out yet, including the barely rideable NW Brynwood Lane, Portland’s steepest road! If you live and breathe steep hills and find yourself in Portland without a bike, we’ve got you covered! #shutuplegs
