Hello friends, I've just agreed to buy a generator for a family we are close with in Vinales, Cuba, and it's costing me $2000 for something that would cost $600 here. Cuba is going thorugh a massive crisis and the people in the countryside are suffering without electricity often. Food and water is also growing scarce.

Facebook doesn't allow personal fundraisers anymore (boo!), so I set up a GoFundMe fundraiser. But GFM said it will take at least 48 hours to review (boo again!)

So- until that gets set up, if you would like to contribute, you can venmo me . A photo of my QR code is in the photos section.

I'll update this post if we hit the $2k mark. And I'll post a photo of the generator delivered tomorrow. If I receive more than $2k I can either send the money back to you or I could maybe buy another generator for someone else in Cuba if there is that much love out there.

Oh, I don't actually send any money to Cuba. The generators are already there. After it's delivered and installed, I send money to Europe via Zelle.

Thanks, and dammit- end the embargo!

Sam

Maui is bleeding in many ways, and we have some important requests of our visitors:

• Visiting Maui Soon?
If you have plans to come in the next few weeks or soon, please postpone your trip. That being said, do not cancel it. Maui businesses will need your support more than ever, and the majority of the island is still great to visit. Priority needs to go to rooms, food, & supplies for the displaced.

Maui is bleeding in many ways, and we have some important requests of our visitors:

• Visiting Maui Soon?
If you have plans to come in the next few weeks or soon, please volunteer. Maui businesses will need your support more than ever, and the majority of the island is still great to visit.

DO NOT DRIVE TO LAHAINA! Have respect for the victims and their families. You’re not welcome right now. The only people that should be heading to Lahaina are emergency personnel, organized volunteers, and residents that need to be either reunited with loved ones or checking on their homes/businesses.

AirBnB, VRBO Owner?
• Let your guests change the date for another time. Then use the units to house the displaced temporarily. We still have thousands in shelters… Don’t be greedy. Show that you have Aloha and belong here as business owners!

Have reservations at a large hotel or resort?
• If they aren’t housing the displaced, GIVE THEM HELL! Most of these mega-resorts are owned by giant mainland corporations, and they don’t feel the Aloha quite the same way we do. Let them know their responsibility!

• Want to help?
Head to MauiRapidResponse.org for drop off locations, verified online donation sites, and more ways to help. And please share this post!

The core of our mission as a company is to meaningfully connect all kinds of people to facilitate mutual understanding and appreciation of each other. We stand unwaveringly with and are grateful for the bravery of everyone speaking out against the criminal acts of injustice happening daily to people of color in our communities. We are methodically developing anti-racism initiatives that use the tools and access we have for the cause, and will share them as soon as they are ready. Stay strong, everyone.

Here’s what leaders can do today.

As the coronavirus continues to cause upheaval to everyday life in countries all around the globe, our team at AEA continues to check in with our global partners and country managers to expand our miniseries. Today, Jon from Jordan shares a glimpse of what life was like when the quarantine restrictions started to go into effect.

From Jon: Greetings from Jordan! When we were all first asked to self quarantine we also found out that all inbound and outbound flights were cancelled and that all travel was completely halted. We went into lockdown on a Saturday and were not even allowed to leave our homes until the following Tuesday.

We have three kids that we have been trying to find a balance with through homeschooling. My wife and I also own an Arabic language center and thankfully were able to get everyone working online before the lockdown.

Each night at 8:00 PM, people around the city were clapping and cheering; expressing their thanks to the police and military for keeping people inside during this time. Attached is a video from one of the nights. The cheering is uplifting and reminds us that we are in this together.

As the coronavirus continues to cause upheaval to everyday life in countries all around the globe, our team at AEA continues to check in with our global partners and country managers to expand our miniseries. Today, Isabel from Valencia, Spain shares a local work of art from her country and shares the meaning behind the creation.

From Isabel: This statue is part of the main falla at the town square, which was in the process of being set up when the coronavirus outbreak started. A falla, like the statue pictured above, is an artistic monument placed in the streets during the Falles Festival in Valencia - an annual celebration of the coming of spring and a commemoration of Saint Joseph. Las Fallas de Valencia is a festival observed by burning artistic monuments in celebration of creativity, mortality, and rebirth and also includes street parties and parades.

This falla was created to represent a woman meditating. After the coronavirus became a more serious problem in Spain, the artist added the face mask as a symbolic addition. Despite the fact that the festival was cancelled this year, this work of art will remain on display in the town square as a symbol of tranquility over the upcoming weeks.
