It was President John Quincy Adams, back in 1826, who commissioned the building of, what would become, this lighthouse. Originally constructed in 1827, the tower was rebuilt in 1835, a structure which remains standing today, 190 years later. A variety of fuel sources have powered the actual light ... candles, s***m whale oil, liquid lard, kerosene, and electricty. Goat Island Lighthouse is located on Goat Island in picturesque Cape Porpoise Harbor. Originally established in 1833, Goat Island Light was the final lighthouse in Maine to become automated in 1990. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation and can be viewed from the mainland on Summer Feet Cycling's Kennebunkport to Freeport self-guided cycling tour.
