It was President John Quincy Adams, back in 1826, who commissioned the building of, what would become, this lighthouse. Originally constructed in 1827, the tower was rebuilt in 1835, a structure which remains standing today, 190 years later. A variety of fuel sources have powered the actual light ... candles, s***m whale oil, liquid lard, kerosene, and electricty. The next time you hold a Maine state quarter in your hand, have a close look ... an image of this lighthouse graces the quarter, honoring Maine's maritime history. Where in Maine will you find this beauty?
