Continuing our North Tabor Bathroom tour, we gain a full view of the entry and clear path of travel. Our clients are resolute about aging in place, thoughtfully planning ahead and noting that most don’t respond until a crisis. The goal for this space was to set them up for any number of life’s eventualities, and spark joy along the way ⭐️

Here’s a magical moment: faucet valve-to-tile perfection.

The real magic is how late in the game we sourced this tile (recall previous post)— the window was set, the faucet valve was in (which, as you may know, has zero wiggle room), and the cabinets + counter were in. This tile line offers two nominally different sized square tiles- the larger was perfect for the walls, and we assumed the same would be used for the backsplash. But when we held the smaller sample up in place, everything clicked. And the rest is [faucet valve-to-tile perfection] history.

It’s easy to look at this bathroom now and think it was always meant to be. But truth be told, it was a long and winding road. We designed every detail of this bathroom around an entirely different tile collection. Every. Detail. The wall thickness, the plumbing and electrical fixture placements, the exact height of the bench, cabinet alignment— ALL OF IT.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain of how it all unraveled and got put back together:

1. We sourced a hand painted tile and a corresponding solid color field tile;
2. When our contractor went to purchase, the solid color field tiles were no longer available… BUT:
3. Unglazed field tiles *were* available, and the homeowner is a potter so….
4. He created a custom glaze to match the hand painted tiles, a process that required several iterations of product development;
5. When the tile setter started installing the tiles, they absorbed water. It was clear the product could not work. Despite responsible due diligence on everyone’s part. So…
6. We paused, shed a tear, then got back to work. We found Ann Sack’s Noddingham tile series and it clicked. Perfectly sized, perfectly glazed, perfectly our clients.

This project remains a great lesson in releasing attachment to an outcome. As designers, we understand the importance of a unifying design concept: it’s needed to achieve mindful, cohesive, and inspired designs. But sometimes we have to let go to make way for something better. And reflecting now, it is better. It’s what it wanted to become all along.

Design is a journey. This one? Highly unusual. But gem clients like this, who are along for the ride, make ALL the difference 💚

New project tour! The latest phase of a classic project— North Tabor— this aging in place bathroom picks up right where we left off. Following an injury, the clients recognized the need for a fully accessible bathroom on the main level. We went straight to work, transforming a standard bungalow hall bath into a spacious, barrier-free, tile-rich, walk-in shower room.

A yoga instructor and meditation guide, the homeowner envisioned a space for small groups to gather in practice. The impressive gong collection takes center stage, at the ready for sound bath sessions. A space for centering and healing, this basement-turned-sanctuary reminds us to engage all our senses on our path to well being.
