Spring Point Ledge Light known to locals as “Old Sparky” was first lit in 1897. The lighthouse was built 950 ft out into Portland Harbors shipping channel where many steam ships were running aground. Even at the highest tide there were depths of only 14 feet. Spring Point Ledge Light is known for its caisson-style build and is the only caisson style lighthouse known in the United States where visitors can walk out to.
To learn more about “Old Sparky” and one of the deepest shipping channels on the east coast book a tour with us!

Nice morning out on House Island a few days back visiting Fort Scammel “built in 1808”. This granite fortification is one of the many harbor defense installments Casco Bay had where back in the late 1700’s through early 1800’s, Portland’s port was one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. After touring with Portland Explorer Tours on land, book a tour with SeaPortland to visit this amazing granite structure tucked into one of Casco Bays forested islands! Sunset, and Private tours also available! https://seaportland.com

“My mom always had a special fondness for Maine, which she first visited when she went to grad school in New Brunswick, Canada. When I was growing up, we traveled here regularly, traveling up and down the coast. Now, once or twice a year I come up on my own for a break and think of her fondly when I do.” -Karen

Karen joined us on a private tour through the streets of downtown Portland and out to the lighthouses a few days back. It was a pleasure having you on tour Karen! Hope you enjoyed your revisit and hope to see you again on tour! Cheers!

To my fellow Portlanders! Fun fact if you never knew, Hub furniture up on Fore Street in the Old Port was the first brick commercial chewing gum factory in the United States back in 1866. Picture below is of John Beacon Curtis, who started Curtis & Son Gum Factory. The building now housing Hub Furniture, is one of the many popular comparisons we have here with Chicago, IL. Another comparison is Portland’s Great Fire of 1866 “largest urban fire in the United States” until the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871. 2017 Chicago was named restaurant city of the year by Bon Appétit Magizine, 2018 Portland was recognized as restaurant city of the year. Our pizza scene can rival Chicago’s, and there are a lot of other comparisons! This past week alone we had a lot of visitors who toured with us on Portland Explorer. A lot were amazed by the similarities between two GREAT cities. On a side note, city of Chicago alone has a population just over 2.5 million. Our great State of Maine, state wide has a population of just over 1.3 million!
