I know my view is in the minority, but I found the much heralded design by Frank Gehry a bit too gimmicky. Too consciously asymmetrical for my taste. What do you think?

A very unusual house perched (literally) on the bank of the Columbia River near Pixie Park in Columbia City. It looks to be a modern replica of a number of 19th century architectural styles. Does anyone know the story of this elegant but puzzling residence?

Lovejoy Fountain (c.1965) part of an urban promenade on the south end of downtown Portland designed by Lawrence Halprin to evoke a ‘sense of place’ in the PNW. The linear park includes 3 fountains and an overall thematic continuity.

Bullfighting ring in Seville. An 18th century landmark in Seville that represents a unique aspect of the Spanish cultural heritage.

Allamillo Bridge (1992) A cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge by noted Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, built for Seville’s Expo 92. It was a soccer weekend in Seville!

San Luis de Los Franceses (1699-1731) by master Seville architect, Leonardo de Figueroa. Baroque on steroids.

04/24/2022

Iglesia de Santa Ana; originally a mosque on this site, rebuilt as a church in the 16th century. The minaret structure still stands as a bell tower.

04/22/2022

The Mezquita, a tenth century mosque converted to a fifteenth century cathedral. In my book, the mosque wins. 🇪🇸

The UMass campus features several buildings erected in the past few years that match the innovative audacity of the highly visible MCM buildings of over a half century ago. Check out the history of the Massachusetts Bulger family!

Peter Schulderman Cottage (c.1894) built by a wealthy Portland businessman as a summer home just a few blocks east of the beach in Seaview. This National Register building is a well-preserved example of a Queen Anne style seasonal residence.

Remains of the TJ Potter steamship built in 1888. A few wooden ribs are all that remain of a hard-working side-wheeler passenger boat owned by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. This popular steamer made the run from Astoria to Portland and back hundreds of times before being beached and scrapped out on this site in 1921. An ignominious end to this grand old side-wheeler.

Oysterville Baptist Church (1892) An architecturally and historically significant building in the Oysterville Historic District. A little 19th century Coastal hamlet preserved and protected.
