Storm hits Estacion Las Tortuga last week! The station was recently hit by a rain & wind storm that caused significant damage to the roofs of the station. The storm ripped off major roofing in almost all building, and the water that leaked in caused extensive damage to the interior of the station.

Last week EcoTeach staff members, Deb Smucker, Greg Enright, and Liz Wall traveled to Costa Rica to finalize details of the 2023 Costa Rica travel season with our in-country partners from Herencia Verde, Pika Viquez and Gabriela Morales.
The last two seasons have been a challenge, but tourism is picking up. Scheduled trips for the 2024 season are starting to fill up. EcoTeach is still working with many of our original locations over the last 25 years and we have added some new ones that reflect the EcoTeach brand of tourism. We appreciate the hundreds of group leaders that have traveled and supported EcoTeach over the years, and we are looking forward to meeting new teachers, parents and travelers during the coming years.

Diving with Green Turtles off La Coco Beach in Costa Rica!

After the turtles work their way from their nest which is about 3 feet or a meter down in the sand, volunteers wait until evening to record weight and measurements. The next step is to release them in different area of the beach trying to scatter them along the 3 kilometers of beach. May is a great time to travel to Costa Rica for laying leatherbacks and hatchlings!

3rd night of turtle patrolling and no turtles came up to lay. You can never predict nature, so that is why 3-4 nights stay at Las Estation Tortuga increases your change of seeing the amazing event of a large turlte laying her eggs. We were able to release some hatchlings for the second night of the season. They have been buried in the sand about a meter down for somewhere around 60 days. We are looking forward to patrolling on our last night and i'm sure it will be a good night. Pura Vida!

So one of the team building exercise was to build a car. Dividing the EcoTeach guides into 2 teams they proceeded to work together and come up with the best car. Because we have the best guides in the country, they each created a real life experience car. Video of the final races will be posted later!
