Did you know...? Most Normandie aficianados know that the ship's funnels flared at the base. However they did not flare when viewed broadside. From that angle they were of equal breadth from cap to deck.

The culmination of 40 years of model-building at Art Model Studios. One of the last (and IMO best) models by Arthur G. Henning. A number of examples have survived but usually appear damaged with severely yellowed enamel. Not an easy restoration due to the variety of materials used and her complex structure, but always worth it in the end!

TSS Ocean Monarch in 1:200 scale. Waterline, travel agency style replica in wood with brass and diecat fittings. For a small ship, she presented some challenges. But that is what makes scratch model building interesting.

Waiting in the wings for a complete overhaul, an oddly scaled (1:128) travel agency model of the Bergensfjord of 1956. She measures 54"/137.2cm. Lacking the accuracy and finesse of most Art Model Studios models, she may have been constructed by an apprentice model maker at the firm. Her unique lifeboat davits are diecast, but almost all other fittings and deck machinery were fabricated in wood - either because of her unusual scale or because it was part of the training process. We will likely never know.

Preparing to begin detailed CAD drawings of missing parts that will need to be fabricated, but what about her three main cargo hatches? They appear to be crudely made and out-of-scale in comparison to the model's smaller hatches and other items. Were the originals removed and replaced?

Not all models are created equal. What characteristics do you think make a great ocean liner model?

Another restoration completed. Dubbelman's 1958, 1:200 scale, brass model of Rotterdam (V) is placed under glass and will soon be sailing home to her owner.

A bit of work today on the TS BALTIKA/Vyacheslav Molotov - a full-hull model in 1:100 scale with some fascinating features. This model dates circa 1940-1950, and is an historic little vessel - definitely worthy of preservation.

Of course one would not expect to see the Bridge illuminated, and it is likely her forward windows were curtained at night, but that's how Dubbelman built her.

Today in the shop: up early to tie on some rigging. The tiny and delicate RDF (on the painting block lower left) will be put into place only after rigging is completed to avoid any damage. The model's lifeboats will receive a final coat of enamel later today and may be soldered to the davits as early as tomorrow.

Following the installation of the model's beautiful, new decks, I couldn't resist returning some of her fittings to their proper place. Her pool house, forward hatches, compass binnacle, Bridge wing telegraphs and deck benches are now back where they belong.

Right now in the shop: Rotterdam's beautiful, new, scribed basswood decks are aligned and fixed to the model with contact cement. It was the client's wish to install a surface more substantial than the original paper, and this turned out to be an excellent upgrade - even if it is a slight diversion from a strict, faithful restoration. After all, paper is wood, is it not?

The little Colombo ready to be placed back into her original crate - with Italian Line label intact.

01/11/2020

Victim of flawed lumber and a sloppy repaint, no one will argue that this small, Italian-built, 1950s wood and tin model of the Cristoforo Colombo is much improved now repaired and restored to her original livery.

I am always drawn to items with a connection to a vessel's crew. This is a stunning, Barker Ellis punch bowl engraved as follows: “Presented to Mr. Fred J. Whemsley as a token of esteem from members of the Victualling Dept. S.S. Fort St. George September 1930.” An impressive presentation piece, 14” from lion’s nose-to-nose and 8” in height. A fantastic example of memorabilia from the Furness Bermuda Line.

Back in the shop and time once again for "What's in the crate?" Clue: a foot longer than the Kronprinzessin Cecilie, but only half her beam...

Putting this one aside for possible trade if a similar example from the Kronprinzessin Cecilie ever turns up...
