Overlanding Inspiration :: This 1990 Toyota Hilux is Business Up Front and a Party in the Back ( ) - by Ashley Giordano ( Desk To Glory )

Italian overlanders Valeria Pixner and Lukas Unterholzner were near Moab, Utah, traveling in a rental van when they decided a four-wheel-drive vehicle was essential for their next trip. Amid a 10-month tour of Patagonia, Australia, New Zealand, and the US, it was near Canyonlands that the couple spotted “cool overlanders” exploring canyons and driving along gravel roads that were out of bounds for their two-wheel-drive van.

Back home in northeastern Italy, Valeria and Lukas were working at a mountain resort, accessed only via a tough gravel road, when they began the search for a four-wheel-drive vehicle. European 4×4 vans were too rare and expensive, so they landed on a 1990 Toyota LN105 Hilux.

Backcountry Discovery Routes to Release Southeast Route – SEBDR - by Arden Kysely

Backcountry Discovery Routes’ newest adventure tour is the Southeast BDR, or SEBDR. Riders can explore the route beginning March 1, 2025 at the World Premier of the 1,300-mile route. It begins at the Gulf of Mexico, takes riders through the Appalachian Mountains, and terminates in Damascus, Virginia. However, there’s no need to stop riding there—the Mid-Atlantic and North East BDRs continue to Canada. This hat trick gives adventure riders a deluxe tour of Eastern U.S. backroads.

Off Road Travel TV Launches on Cable Network TV - by Graeme Bell

Do people still watch regular TV? I asked myself this question more than a few times as I lounged (bored to death) in yet another hotel during a recent drive across North America. After sanitizing the remote, I flipped through the channels, searching for entertainment that could justify the endless ad breaks selling cures to the aged—the only people, other than those who spend a lot of time in hotels, who evidently still tune in. But now, we might just have a very good reason to click away from Netflix.

Off Road Travel TV—which made its worldwide debut on January 12 at 9:30 a.m. ET/PT on the MAVTV channel (Maverick Television, the satellite television channel owned by automotive lubricant company Lucas Oil)—is a digital platform dedicated to exploring remote destinations and rugged terrain. The show highlights journeys through challenging landscapes, offering viewers a close-up look at the preparation, vehicles, and techniques involved in off-road travel.

Overlanding Inspiration :: Pete Ricci’s American Expedition Vehicles - AEV Brute - by Scott Brady

Pete purchased the base Brute from an authorized AEV dealer in spring of 2017. It was based on a salvaged (water damage) 2005 Rubicon that was restored and converted to the Brute in 2014. Pete had been following the Cummins repower development program since the release of the R2.8 and knew that the AEV truck was the perfect platform for him to use with the diesel motor. The original Jeep motor died shortly after ordering the Cummins, so the timing was perfect for supporting the repower with the new engine.

Is the Rogue Van Company RC-1 the Most Expensive Camper Van Ever Sold? - by Graeme Bell

Rogue Van Company has announced a milestone achievement in the van-building industry with the sale of its flagship adventure van, the RC-1, at a record-breaking price of $625,000. The sale of the RC-1, which took place in San Diego, California, on December 16, 2024, is being claimed by Rogue Van Company as the highest price ever paid for a campervan. Yes, you read that all correctly: a camper van has been sold for the cost of a Mexican beach villa. Incredible.

Scout Motors, VW’s direct-to-consumer, South Carolina-based EV brand, had a big presence at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Scout debuted two key technologies aimed at the off-road and overland crowds for its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV: satellite Wi-Fi connectivity and the Harvester range extender. Both features seek to ease common anxieties among adventure travelers.

The EarthRoamer LTx Is Your $800,000 Ticket to Ride - by Stephan Edwards

Positioned as a leaner, meaner option vis-a-vis EarthRoamer’s flagship SX, the LTx is built on the Ford F-550 Lariat chassis cab. The LTx gets down the trail with motivation from Ford’s standard 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel that makes 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. It needs that large fistful of twist because the LTx weighs in at a conservative 18,000 pounds depending on options. These aren’t the only big mechanical specs: the LTx rides on 43-inch military-grade tires, features a 24-volt electrical system, and carries 95 gallons of fuel for an estimated range of 1000 miles. Despite its size, the LTx has real off-road chops with 12.5 inches of ground clearance, a 30-degree approach angle, and a 22-degree departure angle. Just beware of the 29-foot overall length and 14-degree breakover angle.

Overlanding Inspiration :: The 1964 Volkswagen Bug That Could - by Ashley Giordano ( Desk To Glory )

Studies show that the act of witnessing the journey of an underdog instills a sense of hope. Whether we’re following a protagonist’s quest in a novel or watching Rocky, the experience affects our biochemistry, altering our mindset for several days. As any vehicle aficionado knows, this phenomenon extends to our daily drivers, the Land Rovers we see on Instagram, and the vintage cars with no right to arrive in one piece. Roy Spinder’s 1964 Volkswagen Baja Bug is exactly that—the one we root for, the one we want to make it, and the one that gives us hope.

The Bug is nearly 60 years old and has clocked over 70,000 kilometers during its lifetime. It lacks modern luxuries, electronics, and comfort, but there’s something we love about these old vehicles. Maybe it’s the guts and the glory, or the toughness of their owners. Whatever it is, we root for them. “Now that’s a real adventure,” we say.

Honda, Nissan, and Possibly Mitsubishi in Talks to Merge - by Graeme Bell

In a surprising development, automotive giants Honda and Nissan have reportedly made significant progress toward a merger agreement that industry insiders believe could be finalized by 2026. The arrangement, still in its preliminary stages, is expected to reshape the competitive landscape of the global automotive sector. An invitation to Mitsubishi to join the alliance has added a new dimension to the discussions, which are said to be intensifying behind closed doors. If successful, the potential partnership would mark one of the most prominent consolidations in recent automotive history. Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi sold close to 7 million vehicles in 2023 (2024 sales data for each has not yet been released) together, chomping at the heels of Toyota, who posted sales of almost 11 million vehicles for the same period (while total Chinese vehicle sales were close to 30 million, in the process becoming the worlds largest automotive exporter).
