Clusters of gray granite boulders look like elephants lounging under the palm trees on a pink-sand beach, a fantastical vision that could have been conjured by a Hollywood set designer but is all the work of nature. The curious rocks have been sculpted over the eons by wind and water erosion to create not only one of the world's most photographed beaches, but also one of the most exquisite. It's no wonder the beach on the small island of La Digue in the Indian Ocean has appeared in the movies Emmanuel, Cast Away and Crusoe as well as in commercials for Bacardi rum. Located on one of the principal islands of the Republic of the Seychelles archipelago nation, Anse Source d'Argent is hidden behind an old coconut plantation and is best accessed from town by a rented bike. At low tide, the water is calm and shallow, perfect for splashing around in to keep cool, while high tide fills the cove and offers world-class snorkeling.

Gibson Beach, Australia

Local lore credits 19th-century settler Hugh Gibson with building the 86-step stairway from the cliffs to the beach named in his honor in Victoria, Australia, though historians say the passage likely was carved out long before that by the Indigenous Kirrae Whurrong people who used it for decades. Either way, the steps in Port Campbell National Park offer a panoramic view of what is known as the Shipwreck Coast, where the relentless surf-risky to swim in because of the ferocious waves, jagged reefs and rip currents— gnaws away at the 200-foot-tall orange-sand cliffs. Gibson Beach is also the best spot to gaze at Australia's mighty Gog and Magog limestone stacks that rise 120 feet from the water and the iconic 12 Apostles, an array of what was once a dozen limestone rock stacks, now eight, that seem to hold mystical powers, changing colors as the sun moves across the sky.

Because it's often overlooked by tourists, Cadlao Island, one of 45 islets in the Bacuit archipelago, still feels very much like it did hundreds of years ago when Chinese traders sailed here to collect the rare delicacy of edible birds' nests. Limestone peaks covered in lush vegetation and trees filled with monkeys tower 2,000 feet over the turquoise waters of the South China Sea.
One of the filming locations for 2012's The Bourne Legacy, Cadlao Island is still only accessible by boat—a 3-mile trip from El Nido on larger Palawan island, some 200 miles southwest of Manila. Most tour boats head straight to ultra-secluded Cadlao Lagoon, known locally as Ubugon Cove, with its thin strip of sand for a beach and some of the best snorkeling in the world along the coral reefs in the protected aquatic preserve.

Soaring rock arches that look like they've come from Gothic churches inspired the Spanish name of the 1-mile-long beach on the Galician coast that translates to the Beach of Cathedrals. On this stunning stretch of coastline near the town of Ribadeo in the northwest of Spain, the 90-foot-tall natural wonders reveal themselves at low tide, then are swallowed up as the waters rise. Carved by the pounding Atlantic, the formations include the majestic Cathedral Arch and the Ojo del Buey ("ox's eye" in English), a circular cave with an opening that peeks out to the surf like a window. Playa de las Catedrales also has sandy beaches for sunbathing and is so popular during the summer months that access is limited to 4,800 people a day and reservations on a website are required.
