If you are visiting Kauai or thinking of traveling here, please take a moment to read...

This is to bestow a bit of “ho’ihi” (respect and reverence) and “kuleana” (responsibility) to or visiting guests to give you a little perspective and appreciation of our beloved island home during your stay.

With the post Covid shutdown, it's actually a big deal for our little community to be open again... After a very interesting year that of course has been challenging for the business that rely on tourism, there has also been a healthy shift in perspective towards other means of sustaining our economy. Over the years it has been clear that our islands can only handle so much visitor traffic without irreversible effects to our fragile ecosystem and environment, so it is actually with this sentiment that many locals are reluctant to be welcoming tourism back. Because we as hosts know that those who are traveling here might feel a sense of this when they come, we wanted to have our guests be aware and sensitive to these issues.

To ease the great pressure these islands feel from tourism, we ask our guests to display respect for the island and its inhabitants and to have sensitivity and to be conscientiousness during your visit.

-Be extra courteous on the road and where you park and be aware of erosion, private property and general respect of the locals and the island wherever you explore.

-Try to minimize your impact in what you purchase and waste you create.

-Wear reef safe sunscreen, never stand on the reef and give all wildlife distance and space.

-Try to buy local products and support locally owned businesses as much as possible during your stay. Shop at farmer's markets, smaller local stores and look for the "Kauai Made" logo.

-Be sensitive to peak traffic times in adding to local congestion especially where it might hinder locals needing to maintain their work and life schedules.

If you exemplify this level of conscientiousness, you will be appreciated and welcomed by this beautiful island and be rewarded with amazing experiences. It is with great care and sense of responsibility that we are slowly opening back up to visitors and what we ask of those who do come and stay is to do so with great respect and care of our fragile island home and all of its inhabitants.

Hanalei road info update:
Official, yet may not be on the website yet (it was on the community Facebook and we confirmed with a flagger).

Screen shots if the website with the changes noted are below, but basically the change is that the road is now open until midnight rather than 11pm which gives us a bit more time to enjoy an evening before having to get ‘home’. Lines at night are usually small and I’ve even gotten in the lineup after the closing hour (then 11pm), but this now gives a little more freedom… and we gotta say, there’s nothing like a walk on Hanalei Bay in the moonlight!

As far as the other openings go, Saturday’s and Sundays are the most open and easiest with much more in and our freedom without the need to plan around opening times.

It’s also wise to time your returns to Princeville from any destinations East (Kilauea direction) to avoid the lineup that can temporarily block the road. They will begin construction on a Princeville lane next Monday which will help… a bit … to let Princeville traffic through to pass during the lineup. Currently this can be a bummer if you’re not planning around it and get caught. This particular problem is isolated to about 1/2 hour to 45 min before the road opening time, so it is fortunately short lived.

One of my favorite treats and the best Indian Food on the island! Namaste food truck on the very N end of Kapa’a is pure bliss. The previous owner of Shavalik restaurant, Sam, cut overhead and is now a one man show, personally whipping up every deliciously fresh dish. With clean tables right on the waterfront and great atmosphere this stop is highly recommended for a casual and delicious belly pleaser!

Well, after a break from posting for the holidays we are happy to report that the new and improved “Bamboo Bungalow” and “Hala Hale” condos were polished up and finished right down to the last detail in time to welcome guests for Christmas... It took some dodging of rain squalls, creative solutions, perseverance and detail... with the last 5 days of loose end wrap up being a solo mission, but we did it!!

And that’s a wrap!!! Well, ok not exactly... but close! After the successful deck completion the SAME day as we welcomed our first guests back we realized we still had miles of painting to accomplish, plus the completion of various other upgrade and renovation projects... with the hope that we’d have it all zipped up before Sky’s departure back to Wyoming!😅 Let just say we got darn close... just saw Sky off this evening ✈️ and there’s only a bit more for me to tie up... Good thing I’m planning on sticking around 😉😁 We had hoped for a deck completion party with the whole crew, but since we never got a chance to stop before Sky’s departure these goofy shots we’re the best we could do 😆

And literally the moment the last screw was placed, raindrops started to fall from the sky and Kauai released the flood gates that she had so generously held back for every critical moment of our construction project over the past 5 weeks. Feeling so blessed, connected and supported by Kauai right now. So grateful!!! .... we welcomed back our first guests this afternoon and got to clean and hose off our new deck for the first tome!!

Oh my goodness! Progress on the deck and condo has been moving faster than Instagram can keep up with: once the plywood surface was laid, we created an enclosed tarp structure to keep everything dry. Then we put a waterproof silicone coating to seal the plywood. Next we hired pour a concrete/mortar as our final surfacing which they textured, stained to our color choice and sealed... finishing on Sunday so that we could stay on schedule for our first guests arrival on Thursday! 😅 On to the railing, replacing the kitchen window and a marathon of caulking and painting... oh yeah and finishing all the inside projects as well as cleaning a polishing before our guests arrive!!! So grateful for the best team mate ever!!
