Happy Heavenly Birthday Céleo Álvarez Casildo.

Céleo Alvarez Casildo (March 9,1959– April 11, 2016), was a Honduran Garifuna human rights activist, dedicated to promote respect for human rights, self-determination of People of African Descent, promote social inclusion and improve their quality of life. His ideals and struggle were in search for what he called the "Voices that would break the silence perpetuated for more than five centuries”. Céleo became the most visible spokesperson and leader of the People of African Descent Movement in Latin America and is recognized as one of The Most Influential Contemporary African Diaspora Leaders.

Did you know that Mujeres Garinagu En Marcha. Pro Educacion, inc. (MUGAMA), the first modern Garifuna organization in NYC, was founded by incredible women like Dionisia Amaya-Bonilla, Lydia Sacasa-Hill, and Mirtha Sabio, Abelina Guiy de Rochez, Luz Ruiz, Iris Yolanda Blanco, Manuela Sabio, Ana Carlota Castro and others?

Founded in 1989, to empower Garifuna women and advocate for our community. MUGAMA’s purposes were (a) to preserve and advance the history and culture of the Garifuna people through cultural and educational activities; (b) encourage and support the education of the Garifuna community in academic pursuits, leadership, and personal growth. They achieved HUGE milestones like:

* Getting the Garifuna language recognized by the NYC Board of Education!
* Becoming the first Garifuna org to receive 501(c)(3) status and major funding!

This Women's History Month, let's honor these trailblazers and their legacy!
